Coldest Winter Freeze On Way by Dean Herbert
SCOTLAND can expect the first big winter freeze by the end of the month, with temperatures plunging to as low as -15C, forecasters predicted last night.
Experts warned the UK is set to shiver with bitterly cold winds, harsh frosts and snow likely to last into December.
Scotland is expected to be battered by rain storms and gale force winds within the next week, before falling victim to “well below seasonal average” temperatures at the end of the month.
Met Office figures already show that 2012 has been one of the coldest years since 1996.
Yesterday forecasters said that Scotland could expect to see temperatures plunge to between -10C and -15C by the end of the month. It is also believed Scotland could see a repeat of the winter of 2010, when temperatures fell to as low as -18C in some parts of the country.

Former BBC forecaster Michael Fish said an area of low pressure near Iceland is to blame for the extreme weather.
He said: “There is unsettled weather with showers and longer outbreaks of rain for the whole of the coming week.
“A deep area of low pressure near Iceland is swinging down towards Scotland bringing in bands of showers and gale-force winds.
“Low pressure then moves off before another one comes swinging down towards Scotland.”
Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, said: “A significant big freeze is likely to arrive by the end of November.
“We are on course for a savage blast bringing severe frosts which will set in for a couple of weeks, into the opening salvo of December.
“We are looking at temperatures overnight as low as -10C with wind chill making -12C to -15C likely.
“Something on a par with the big freezes we have seen in recent years is quite possible.”
He also warned “persistent” rain could pose “a real risk up until February” of flooding in Scotland and other parts of the UK.
He added: “This raises the spectre of flooding once more, and people should be aware this is a real risk.”
The Met office said Scotland could expect “colder conditions into December,” with a risk of snow.
And James Madden, of Exacta Weather said: “November is likely to feature below-average temperatures as a whole.
“It will become progressively colder throughout the month and into the start of winter, with the development of some quite severe frosts in places. These cooler periods will be accompanied by further falls of snow across higher ground, and these are also likely to develop across some lower levels of the country at times too.”
