Re: ‘Climate Policy Bust,’ Peter Foster, Sept. 29.
The federal government must be included among Peter Foster’s list of climate change deceivers responsible for today’s hysteria. Despite Stephen Harper’s promises while in opposition, Environment Canada (EC) remains a leader in climate propaganda and it still features the Mann “hockey stick” on its website as if it were meaningful.
I recently asked EC Minister Jim Prentice why it is still there. Assistant Deputy Minister Dr. Brian T. Gray wrote to me, “We recommend that website users always check the date when a departmental website page has been updated,” admitting it had not been updated since 2003. But, it is still a live link, only two clicks in from the EC greenhouse gas home page updated on Dec. 11, 2008 which in turn is directly linked to EC’s “Frequently Asked Questions” climate web page updated on Sept. 28, 2009. EC managers must know that most people will not check the date of every page they visit and so will assume the department still supports material actively linked to just-updated pages.
And it appears they certainly do. While Gray explained to me that EC “is working on the development of new science content for its climate change website,” much of this new material is riddled with the same science errors that we saw under the Liberals. The reason for this is clear — “Environment Canada, when it comes to the climate change issue, relies substantially on conclusions reached by the [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] in its ongoing series of scientific assessments,” wrote Gray. Yes, and that is a big problem since the IPCC is known to be a biased organization focused on stirring up yet more climate alarm.
It is time the government stopped promoting unfounded climate fears and simply told the truth — that the study of Earth’s complex climate systems is still in its infancy and that the more we learn, the more we realize how little we understand. Spending billions on “fighting climate change,” as Prentice asserts “is important to Canadians,” is vastly premature and a wholly inappropriate use of public monies.
