The island of El Hierro is under red alert, with residents being prepared for a possible evacuation
The 600 residents of the town of La Restinga on the Canary Island of El Hierro have been told to prepare to evacuate and are gathering at the local football stadium today, 11 October 2011 as the Spanish government warns that a second undersea volcanic eruption is imminent. This second eruption is expected to be much closer to the coast of the island; hence the evacuation order and the increase of the alert level from yellow to red.
Second Eruption Imminent
The eruption that took place yesterday 10 October 2011 has now been confirmed but scientists are very concerned that the flow of magma is not as strong as expected, therefore the volcano may erupt though a different fissure, much closer to the coastline of the island. So far, no-one has been hurt and residents of the island are fairly calm. Those that have been interviewed by the various Spanish television stations seem to be taking all the drama in their stride with some people still sun-bathing on the beach whilst others hurry to pack up their stuff and head away from the danger area to the island’s capital of Valverde.
