Updated with MUST READ comments by Piers Corbyn
To whom it may concern
We just heard that President Nasheed of the Maldives has resigned.
How do we react to that?
One side of the story is political – I don't comment that side.
One side is scientific and science ethical – and there I am very happy.
President Nasheed has constantly claimed that his nation will soon be submerged by a rapidly rising sea level.
A claim not founded in observational facts, however.
I and my group of inernational sea level soecialists have investigated the situation in details.
There are very firm evidence that the sea level has remained constant for the last 40 years.
The same is recorded in Bangladesh, Goa and Minicoy (the closest island to the north).
In three "Open letters to the President" I have strongly tried to get President Nasheed to listen to the facts of nature itself.
But no - not even a reply.
Now, the sea level rise did not take him litteraly - but the people of his own country.
I hope for a better communication with real science in the centre – for the benefit of the country and its very nice people.
