It’s known as the Great Arctic Cyclone, and when it roared out of Siberia last August, storm watchers knew it was unusual. Hurricane-like storms are very common in the Arctic, but the most powerful of them (which are still far less powerful than tropical hurricanes) tend to come in winter.
It wasn’t clear at the time, however, whether the August storm was truly unprecedented.
Now it is.
A study published in Geophysical Research Letters looks at no fewer than 19,625 Arctic storms and concludes that in terms of size, duration and several other of what the authors call “key cyclone properties,” the Great Cyclone was the most extreme summer storm, and the 13th most powerful storm -- summer or winter -- since modern satellite observations began in 1979.

I noticed today's chart from TropicalStormRisk.com had its fist active tropical storm report for several days.
It shows Cyclone Sandra gathering strength and is due to "power up" to CAT2 or more in the next day or so.
The only notable Solar activity I came across during this week was from a farside eruption on Tuesday. This solar event is a little later then I usually associate to these solar climate changes such as Cyclone "Sandra".
I have also noticed a change this week to the Proton Flux chart during the past few days (below). This looks to confirm the weaker solar event and it happens to fall into an "R3" period forecast from Piers Corbyn i.e. Piers wasn't expecting anything major to happen this week on the Sun either.
I think it's safe to say that the delay of a couple days between the event on the Sun and Cyclone Sandra doesn't look too out of place given the above mentioned scenarios
Using their hi-tec website, this 3-5 day Met Office forecast indicates there is nothing to worry about, otherwise it would be coloured, and as you can see it's plain or if you like "un-shaded", indicting for the time of the year they expect "normal January weather", that is in contrast to the 1-2 day forecast I have posted below, it is shaded and includes a level 3 warning due to the below average cold weather and snow etc.
Those of you who have seen the forecast for this period, issued from WeatherAction.com by Piers Corbyn at the end of December (that's right, "end of December") would have noticed that Piers is expecting this period to be one of his highest solar ratings of the year, an R5+, and it takes place from Wednesday 16th and ends on the 18th*. Then allowing for one or two days for the Earth's climate to "process" this event (that's "cause and effect" to you and me) there should be a noticeable climatic change (NOT a "man made" one, but a "Solar Climate Change") in the UK and indeed around the world taking place by no later then Sunday 20th January.
I will include these Met Office daily charts until the last day (Sunday), they should start to change colour, maybe even "Red" as we progress through the week

YouTube from SolarHam.com I think I have found yet another Solar flare and Earthquake combination today, surprising the Piers Corbyn "R3" rating does not support this as a being as a key Solar/Lunar event, I will keep this news report as a stat for the end of year analysis.....more to follow.
SolarHam.com: Solar activity has been low with a long duration C-Class flare detected this morning, associated with a filament eruption in the northern hemisphere. A Coronal Mass Ejection is seen leaving the Sun and may have somewhat of an Earthward component, but a majority of the cloud appears to be headed North in the latest Lasco C3 images. I will provide more updates on this when more data is available. All three visible Sunspots 1665, 1667 and 1670 are currently stable.
BOGOTA, Colombia — A powerful but deep earthquake shook a broad swath of Colombia and Ecuador on Saturday, sending frightened people fleeing into the streets, but no serious injuries or major damage were reported.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the 9:16 a.m. (14:16 GMT) quake had a magnitude of 6.9.It was centered about 7 miles (12 kilometers) from the Colombian town of Pasto and 92 miles (154 kilometers) below the surface....click washingtonpost.com for more
16 January 2013 - The Met Office is warning of the risk of disruption as heavy snow is forecast across many parts of the UK on Friday.
A band of rain will push into the west into Friday morning, turning increasingly to sleet and snow. Parts of northwest England, Wales and the west midlands are particularly at risk of seeing significant falls of snow and the risk of blizzard conditions in the strong winds.
Met Office Severe Weather Warnings have been issued for the heavy snow. An amber warning is in place for parts of Wales and western England where accumulations of 10 to 15 cm are expected and 20 cm or more over the hills.
Met Office weather warnings help you plan, prepare and protect yourself and others from the impacts of severe weather. An amber warning means you need to be prepared for the weather and take steps to change your plans and protect you, your family and your community from the impacts of the severe weather.
Whilst snow will fall over most areas, the far west, including Northern Ireland, Cornwall and extreme western parts of Wales are expected to see rain.
Eddy Carroll, Met Office Chief Forecaster, said: "The snow is expected to be heaviest through Friday morning, slowly weakening and clearing east during the second half of the day.
Updated below with new AMBER warning information upto Sunday
This active period was NOT forecast as a Pier Corbyn "Red Warning" R4/R5 period and there is also no current indication of a "power up" of tropical storms going on, although for the past two days we have seen a CAT1 being present.
This looks as if it could be the start of bigger events to come, maybe this is a second peak for SC24?...more to follow
The most active sunspot so far is emerging over the sun's northeastern limb. Crackling witth flares, it unleashed an M1.7-class eruption on Jan. 5th at 09:34 UT that sent a wave of ionization rippling through the upper atmosphere over Europe. More flares appear to be in the offing; stay tuned....
The above extract is from the "Red Warning" report issued at the start of January from Piers Corbyn at WeatherAction.com
You would have noticed that there have been several recent commentators indicating that the current Sudden Polar Stratospheric Warming has induced a change to weather patterns in the Northern Hemisphere producing a much colder circulation of air.
According to this report from Piers Corbyn, there will be Additional Stratospheric Warming, making the current conditions even worse, also including in this forecast is a higher chance of M7+ Earthquake, and an enhancement to storms....more to follow.
The last and ONLY M7+ EQ so far this year was on the 5th January, and it was a direct result of a Solar flare, but unlike this time it did NOT fall in a high "R" period and there was no Tropical Storm "power up", unlike this time, this time we did note a major Tropical Storm "power up" that went up to CAT 4, so once again our view of solar activity and changes in the Earth's climate has something in common and it's thanks to Piers we have a good idea when it will happen (not 100% but better then ZERO)....well done again to Piers.....pity the media have not reported on your success yet
Many of you have emailed me about the recent Piers Corbyn R5+ Solar/Lunar forecast saying the results were so similar between Hurricane "Sandy" and Blizzard "Nemo" that we should put out a statement of some sort.
In principal I agree with that request, but the reality is people will not comprehend what it is we are informing them about.
In our Statement: Solar Climate Change and Hurricane "Sandy" dated 1st November we put forward that a top level Solar/Lunar period, an R5+, was extended due to longer then expected burst of solar activity, and as a result there was a M7.7 Earthquake in Canada and Hurricane "Sandy" that formed in the Atlantic, she then went to the North East of the USA and hit the East coast, the rest as they say is history.
This week we had another extended R5+ period that was also due to longer then expected solar activity, that ALSO had a very high rated Earthquake (M8) and another formation of "super storm" in the Atlantic that has now run along the North East of USA. And yet the worlds media, and sadly this also includes Anthony Watts at WUWT who runs a skeptical scientific website for people who only share his version of skeptical views, will pay not attention to what we have had to say about the events of this week.
It is regret to those who have noticed this similarity in events between the last four months that what you have seen during live experiments is not worthy for the public domain yet. I guess the world is not ready for the revelation that our Sun and our Moon control the Earth's climate, and oh how at time like this I wish we had funding like other skeptical web sites.
Its thanks to the worlds media and sadly as already mentioned, that includes Anthony Watts, these two similar stories of two Major Atlantic storms and two Major Earthquakes will not be promoted.
The discovery made by Piers Corbyn about how our climate works in conjunction with the Sun and Moon will remain a secret to only those with open minds
