This chart shows cold winds from the Arctic over the UK on Saturday -twitter.com/DerekTheWeather - Derek went on to say "the cold snap looks like being short-lived" - we will have wait and see abou that.
Meanwhile see this report and Video from the USA - Second Arctic Outbreak on the Way - accuweather.com - Another blast of arctic air will sweep from the northern Plains to the mid-Atlantic and New England as the week progresses.
The cold wave will follow a brief warmup that will lead to severe weather in some locations.
According to Meteorologist Mark Paquette, "A second pulse of stratospheric warming occurred during the middle of January is now sending another blast of arctic air southward."

Satellite images breathtaking scary cyclone in the Atlantic, but the real show is the UK's snowy surface
- by Peppe Caridi, Google Translate Meteoweb.eu Italian/English
We have already spoken at length of ' impressive extratropical cyclone deep 930hPa over the Atlantic Ocean: is what immediately jumps to the eyes looking at the maps of these hours, with a swirl of clouds really scary ocean, bound for Europe and namely the United Kingdom, where the cyclone will come in the next few hours. But the real show maps of the UK today it is almost completely covered with snow after frost and bad weather of recent days.
In fact, much of Europe is covered with snow and ice, including France, but many clouds from the ground prevent us from observing the satellites as it does now for Scotland and England, where the sky remained clear. Tomorrow, this will cause deep cyclone storms between Spain North / West Africa and Portugal, and strong winds over much of the continent. It is from this deep low pressure systems will release tomorrow evening trough that will be cut / off on Italy causing the passage of a fast and intense disturbance between Monday and Tuesday, with rain and storms too strong especially in the Tyrrhenian regions of our country, the first the mild cyclone in the following days, between late January and early February, will provide full sun and mild temperatures throughout Italy

Image taken from Netweather.tv on the 18th January
Now here is an interesting observation that took place AFTER the recent TWO Erupting Filaments of Solar Magnetism on the 23rd January.
The Above image is the location of the Jet Stream as of the 18th January posted at this site on the same day along with a Proton Flux chart.
See below for the area marked "watch this space", the original pressure area was the reason the UK had an easterly flow of cold air

Yesterday I gave the above proton Flux chart a heading of "Uk January Freeze Starts", today I noticed a prominent re-location of the Jet Stream South of the UK, same effect, but this latest image puts it into perspective, needless to say I guess Temperatures in the UK will remain much cooler as a result of this Jet Stream Shift.

The above extract is from the "Red Warning" report issued at the start of January from Piers Corbyn at WeatherAction.com
You would have noticed that there have been several recent commentators indicating that the current Sudden Polar Stratospheric Warming has induced a change to weather patterns in the Northern Hemisphere producing a much colder circulation of air.
According to this report from Piers Corbyn, there will be Additional Stratospheric Warming, making the current conditions even worse, also including in this forecast is a higher chance of M7+ Earthquake, and an enhancement to storms....more to follow.
The last time we had an R5+ Solar event was from a forecast for the 26-27th October, this resulted in Hurricane Sandy and a M7.7 Earthquake in Canada....watch this space for more!

It’s known as the Great Arctic Cyclone, and when it roared out of Siberia last August, storm watchers knew it was unusual. Hurricane-like storms are very common in the Arctic, but the most powerful of them (which are still far less powerful than tropical hurricanes) tend to come in winter.
It wasn’t clear at the time, however, whether the August storm was truly unprecedented.
Now it is.
A study published in Geophysical Research Letters looks at no fewer than 19,625 Arctic storms and concludes that in terms of size, duration and several other of what the authors call “key cyclone properties,” the Great Cyclone was the most extreme summer storm, and the 13th most powerful storm -- summer or winter -- since modern satellite observations began in 1979.

We may have to get used to wet summers like we've seen recently across the UK, according Dr Edward Hanna from Sheffield University in an interview which you can see on Inside Out and Look North tonight.
According to Dr Hanna and an international team of scientists, melting summer Arctic ice may be weakening the jet stream, leading it to meander and become slow moving.
This effectively means that weather patterns become locked in for long periods of time.
The jet stream is a ribbon of strong winds high up in the atmosphere, a result of the temperature contrast between northern latitudes towards the Arctic, and latitudes further south.
Because the Arctic is warming faster than any other region on earth, this temperature contrast is getting weaker, leading to a less powerful jet stream in summer.

You may have noticed that the Proton flux chart I used yesterday had the start of a steep rise, and as you can see from the latest chart above it has peaked and fallen in a short space of time. What you may not have known was that the European Jet Stream has relocated below the UK. The question now remains as to when will it reposition itself?
There are about four days to go before the next major "R" period (R5), that starts around the 19th December, and if in that time frame the Jet Stream relocates across or above the UK, the cut off low could be a repeat of the one that happened in early November.
There was devastating effect of the "cut off low" over Europe last time, as a result of the solar enhancement from another R5 period, lets hope there is not the same situation again...more to follow.
