ALMOST X-FLARE : Sunspot complex AR1520-1521 erupted again on July 19th, this time producing an M7-class solar flare that almost crossed the threshold into X-territory...
..Although the explosion occured on the other side of the sun's western limb, our planet could feel some effects. The blast site is magnetically connected to Earth by backward-spiralling lines of magnetic force. Protons accelerated by the flare are being guided to us by those lines of magnetism, and a mild radiation storm is underway.

NOCTILUCENT CLOUDS IN MOTION: "Last night (July 17)some nice noctilucent clouds appeared over Stockholm," reports Swedish photographer Peter Rosen. "Watching NLCs this summer has made me take an interest in their intricate movements--so I decided to create some close-up timelapse movies using a telephoto lens."
"What looked like a serene view from a distance behaves more like a stormy sea with wave after wave rolling in," he observes.
When NLCs first appeared in the 19th century, the mysterious clouds were confined to the Arctic, most often seen in the same places as Northern Lights. In recent years, however, their "habitat" has been expanding, rippling as far south as Colorado, Virginia, Kansas, and Utah. There is growing evidence that the expansion is a sign of climate change, although this remains controversial.

SLOW EXPLOSION - SpaceWeather.com: Sunspot complex AR1520-1521 erupted on July 17th, producing an M1-class flare that unfolded slowly over a period of hours. Slow explosions often produce CMEs, and this one was no exception...
..According to a forecast track prepared by analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab, the CME will hit Venus on July 19th and could deliver a glancing blow to Earth on July 20th

More rain is expected in the south of the country after almost 80cm falls in three days.
With forecasters predicting yet more rain for Japan, authorities have given orders for a mass evacuation. In some areas almost 80cm (31in) of rain fell in just 72 hours - devastating a vast swathe of the country's southern Kyushu island.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned of more landslides and flooding as rainfall of 11cm (4in) per hour was recorded in some areas. Evacuation orders have been issued to around 260,000 people in the north of the island where more rivers have now burst their banks, according to local media reports.
Authorities described this amount of rain over such a short period of time as unprecedented. Japan's Self-Defence Force has been mobilised to help with the evacuation - helping people get to emergency shelters set up in places like schools and gyms.
In Oita prefecture, one evacuee described how he had to seek refuge in a school gymnasium. "What is going on? I've never experienced anything like this in my life," he said.
