Flooding is still causing problems for roads, rail and properties, as the most intense September storm for 30 years continues. About 70 warnings were in place, mainly in the north of England.
Some areas could receive a further 20-40mm (0.8-1.6ins) of rain. However, the weather will slowly improve throughout the day, forecasters said. Hundreds of people spent the night in temporary shelter and parts of many roads were closed.
Tuesday saw some places deluged in what was their wettest September day on record, with hundreds of homes being evacuated.

Our good friend Vukcevic has just posted on a WUWT open thread this spectral analysis of the signed sunspot cycle (solar magnetic cycle) compared to land and sea surface temperature, and the Earth’s geomagnetism. I trust he will be along to explain a little further.
M Vukcevic: Apparent relations between solar magnetic cycle, lunar nodal cycle, and ocean surface temperature.
The red arrow specifies the length of the 18.6 year Lunar nodal cycle.

Volcanologists said powerful eruptions were catapulting burning rocks as high as 1,000m (3,280ft) above the crater and lava was flowing down its slopes.
Locals reported how the roaring of the volcano shook windows and roofs in nearby villages.
Experts say the eruption of the Fuego, 50km (31 miles) south-west of Guatemala City, is the biggest since 1999

Peter Lilley: What is Wrong with Stern? The Failings of the Stern report of the Economics of Climate Change
- Click for PDF
London, 4 September: As the cost of government measures to combat climate change hit households and businesses, a new study published by the Global Warming Policy Foundation casts grave doubts on the validity of the “Stern Review of the Economics of Climate Change” which the government relies on to justify its policies.
The substantial study, by Peter Lilley MP, is the most thorough analysis of the Stern Review so far undertaken. It takes the IPCC’s view of the science of global warming as given, but points out that Stern’s economic conclusions contradict the views of most of the world’s leading environmental economists and even the economic conclusions of the IPCC itself. The study also catalogues a series of errors and distortions in the Stern Review “any one of which would have caused it to fail peer review”.
Because Stern’s conclusions endorsed policies adopted by both government and opposition and its highly tendentious assumptions were not explicit, it was initially accepted without public scrutiny.
The new study shows the Stern Review to depend critically on “selective choice of facts, unusual economic assumptions and a propagandist narrative – which would never have passed peer review”.
Describing it as “policy based evidence”, Peter Lilley argues the government can no longer rely on it to justify expenditure of many billions of pounds and calls for a return return instead to “evidence based policies”.

Earthquake 'Swarm' Shakes Southern California - news.sky.com
More than 100 aftershocks force people to flee their homes near the farming community of Brawley.
Scores of earthquakes measuring up to 5.5 magnitude have rattled southern California, knocking trailer homes off their foundations and shattering windows.
The largest tremor was centred just three miles northwest of the small farming community of Brawley, about 115 miles from San Diego, forcing some people to leave their homes.
Mike Patel, who manages Townhouse Inn & Suites in Brawley, said: "It felt like there was quake every 15 minutes. One after another. My kids are small and they're scared and don't want to come back inside."
As well as the 5.5 earthquake and a subsequent 5.3 tremor, more than 30 additional earthquakes with magnitudes of at least 3.5 shook the area near the southern end of the Salton Sea.

Magnetic fields snaking over the sun's northeastern limb erupted on August 18th around 01:02 UT. The M5.5 class eruption was not Earth-directed, but it could herald a significant uptick in geoeffective solar activity as the new active region turns toward Earth in the days ahead.
