In 2008, Britian’s Met Office noted a 10-year pause, or sharp slowing, in the warming trend and asked this question in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’ annual State of the Climate:
Do global temperature trends over the last decade falsify climate predictions?
No, it decided. Global warming models wouldn’t be clearly wrong until the pause lasted 15 years:
Observations indicate that global temperature rise has slowed in the last decade… The simulations rule out (at the 95% level) zero trends for intervals of 15 yr or more, suggesting that an observed absence of warming of this duration is needed to create a discrepancy with the expected present-day warming rate.
Werner Brozek checks the latest data for warming trends:
On all data sets below, the different times for a slope that is at least very slightly negative ranges from 4 years and 7 months to 16 years and 1 month.
DOCTOR Karl Kruszelnicki presents science on the ABC. Dr Craig Emerson is a Minister in the Government that makes you pay a carbon tax.
So the two should at least know the basic data about global warming.
Alas.
Dr Kruszelnicki, one of Australia's "National Living Treasures", last week tweeted in outrage: "How does A Bolt get away with saying planet hasn't warmed in the last 16 years."
Dr Emerson, the Trade Minister, replied: "Mr Bolt can have his own opinions but he can't have his own facts. Global temperatures are rising. Fact."
"Fact", Craig?
This wouldn't be serious if Dr Kruszelnicki wasn't helping to promote a great scare that our gases are frying the world, and Dr Emerson wasn't a member of the Government making us spend billions to "stop" it. Let me try to explain.

The Council has considered several complaints about an article by Andrew Bolt, "Time that climate alarmists fessed up", in the Herald Sun on 1 February 2012. The same article also appeared in Mr Bolt's blog on the Herald Sun website under the heading, "Open your eyes. Where's that warming?". The article opened by saying “let’s see how the great global warming scare is panning out, shall we? First, the planet hasn't warmed for a decade - or even 15 years, according to new temperature data from Britain's Met Office". A later sentence began: “Sea levels have recently dipped, the oceans have lately cooled, Arctic ice has not retreated since 2007 …”.
Three people complained separately to the Council that the article contained a number of misrepresentations. A key complaint related to the assertion that the Met Office data showed no warming in the last 15 years. The assertion had been made on 29 January in an article by David Rose in the UK newspaper Mail on Sunday. The Met Office responded on the same day that "for Mr Rose to suggest that the global temperatures available show no warming for the last 15 years is entirely misleading". The complainants also said that because the changes in sea and ice conditions mentioned by Mr Bolt were relatively short-term and minor they did not refute the longer-term trends in the opposite direction. Therefore, they said, his statements gave a misleading impression.
Friday Evening Political Forum: Beyond the Carbon Price
Part 7 of 8: Christine Milne, leader of the Australian Greens, delivers an inspiring call to action as the consequences of climate change are clearly upon us while economically we are continuing a business as usual policy.
The action required is urgent and we need to drive an increase in action through increasing the RET (Renewable Energy Target) in 2012, ensuring Climate Change is a major topic of the 2013 election and immediately stop the expansionist policy of developing coal, gas and coal seam gas mining.

LET'S take stock of the great global warming scare and see how it's panning out.
First, the planet hasn't actually warmed for a decade - or even 15 years - according to new temperature data released by Britain's Met Office.
Hmm. That's not what global warming scientists predicted.
Look out of your window. The rain that Climate Commissioner Tim Flannery said in 2007 "isn't actually going to fill our dams and river systems" any more has just flooded NSW and Queensland yet again.
The Bureau of Meteorology - which three years ago warned "we are just not going to have that sort of good rain again" - now admits last year was our third wettest on record.
The snowfalls that the University of East Anglia in 2000 said would soon become "a very rare and exciting event" are falling as hard as ever.
The monster hurricanes we were told to expect by Nobel Prize winner Al Gore are coming no more often.
