Heavy snow to bring risk of disruption on Friday - Met Office
16 January 2013 - The Met Office is warning of the risk of disruption as heavy snow is forecast across many parts of the UK on Friday.
A band of rain will push into the west into Friday morning, turning increasingly to sleet and snow. Parts of northwest England, Wales and the west midlands are particularly at risk of seeing significant falls of snow and the risk of blizzard conditions in the strong winds.
Met Office Severe Weather Warnings have been issued for the heavy snow. An amber warning is in place for parts of Wales and western England where accumulations of 10 to 15 cm are expected and 20 cm or more over the hills.
Met Office weather warnings help you plan, prepare and protect yourself and others from the impacts of severe weather. An amber warning means you need to be prepared for the weather and take steps to change your plans and protect you, your family and your community from the impacts of the severe weather.
Whilst snow will fall over most areas, the far west, including Northern Ireland, Cornwall and extreme western parts of Wales are expected to see rain.
Eddy Carroll, Met Office Chief Forecaster, said: "The snow is expected to be heaviest through Friday morning, slowly weakening and clearing east during the second half of the day.

THE big freeze last night sparked fears of a national health emergency in Britain as forecasters warned of worsening snow conditions.
Freezing winds from Russia could bring the lowest temperatures ever recorded in the UK as some areas face days of heavy snow.
The Met Office has upgraded a week-long cold weather health alert across England to Level-3 – one step below a national emergency.
It stresses that “severe cold weather” could pose a health risk to the elderly and vulnerable.
A near nationwide whiteout yesterday saw around three inches of snowfall in Scotland where temperatures had fallen to -24C (-11.2F) with wind chill.
Severe weather warnings for snow and ice across Britain today and tomorrow have been issued. Two inches of snow is likely in the East where temperatures could plunge to -10C and lows of -15C are possible on higher ground.

The above is a snapshot of the expected weather in the UK as per forecast from the Met Office (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/uk_forecast_warnings.html?day=2) starting from Wednesday 16th January, issued on Monday 14th January.
Using their hi-tec website, this 3-5 day Met Office forecast indicates there is nothing to worry about, otherwise it would be coloured, and as you can see it's plain or if you like "un-shaded", indicting for the time of the year they expect "normal January weather", that is in contrast to the 1-2 day forecast I have posted below, it is shaded and includes a level 3 warning due to the below average cold weather and snow etc.
Those of you who have seen the forecast for this period, issued from WeatherAction.com by Piers Corbyn at the end of December (that's right, "end of December") would have noticed that Piers is expecting this period to be one of his highest solar ratings of the year, an R5+, and it takes place from Wednesday 16th and ends on the 18th*. Then allowing for one or two days for the Earth's climate to "process" this event (that's "cause and effect" to you and me) there should be a noticeable climatic change (NOT a "man made" one, but a "Solar Climate Change") in the UK and indeed around the world taking place by no later then Sunday 20th January.
I will include these Met Office daily charts until the last day (Sunday), they should start to change colour, maybe even "Red" as we progress through the week

The above extract is from the "Red Warning" report issued at the start of January from Piers Corbyn at WeatherAction.com
You would have noticed that there have been several recent commentators indicating that the current Sudden Polar Stratospheric Warming has induced a change to weather patterns in the Northern Hemisphere producing a much colder circulation of air.
According to this report from Piers Corbyn, there will be Additional Stratospheric Warming, making the current conditions even worse, also including in this forecast is a higher chance of M7+ Earthquake, and an enhancement to storms....more to follow.
The last time we had an R5+ Solar event was from a forecast for the 26-27th October, this resulted in Hurricane Sandy and a M7.7 Earthquake in Canada....watch this space for more!

THE biggest freeze in 20 years is set to bring a foot of snow by the start of next week.
As the first blizzards hit Cumbria and the North-west yesterday, the Met Office issued severe weather warnings across much of the UK for the next three days.
Forecasters said parts of the North-east and Scotland could be knee-deep in snow by Monday.
Breakdown services last night warned of “widespread chaos” in the most severe whiteout since the winter of 1993.
Britain faces a two-pronged attack from swathes of snow-laden air due to pour in from the Atlantic and the North Sea. Worst hit will be the East, South-east, Central and Northern regions, though nowhere will escape the winter blast. Gritters and snowploughs are on standby to avoid a repeat of 2010 when roads and airports were severely disrupted.
Councils have stockpiled more than 1.3 million tons of salt and grit, 100,000 tons more than three years ago, though experts warn temperatures could sink too low for it to be effective.
There are fears it could be February before there is any let-up in the extreme weather.
Government forecasters have issued a level-2 cold weather alert.
The Met Office said parts of the country could see 12 inches of snow by Monday. Forecaster Sarah Holland said the first widespread wintry showers would arrive at the weekend with the entire country braced for heavy snow on Monday.

This is a repeated and updated posting from Piers Corbyn at WeatherAction.com....let's see how he gets on with what he has to say in the next week or so.....I'm not so certain about this forecast but then I have been wrong before in what he has had to say, This IS a Public Warning....
Extreme cold, blizzards and snow drifts "many feet deep" to bring chaos to England and Wales for at least three weeks - into early Feb
·WeatherAction forecast issued ahead of all others
This catastrophic forecast scenario was first issued in detail in mid-December by WeatherAction long range forecasters and is now starting to come true.
"Other forecasters are just starting to agree with us three weeks late but they don’t realize how severe this is going to be", said Piers Corbyn, astrophysicist of WeratherAction.com
"Our solar-lunar based forecast predicted generally increasingly cold and very cold weather from around Sat 12th Jan for Britain and Ireland.
Next, waves of major Arctic blasts and blizzards with many feet of drifting snow are likely in places from around 20th with another major blizzardy blast around the begining of February.
"England and Wales including the South are likely to get the deepest snow, while Scotland and Northern parts of Ireland will probably be very cold rather than very snowy. Some of the SouthWest of Britain and Ireland will probably get rain rather than snow at times.

"There will be fluctuations in the severity of this weather but our confidence in this general forecast is increased by our new breakthrough in predicting major sudden warmings of the polar stratosphere, which in a contradictory way drive blasts of very cold air south.

BRITAIN is braced for weeks of heavy snow set to trigger the worst whiteout for years and cause chaos across the country.
Temperatures are expected to plunge to -15C (5F) in exposed parts from the weekend – with up to five inches of snow possible.
Forecasters said the entire country faces a crippling big freeze which could last until the middle of February as winter finally arrives with a vengeance.
Last night, as gritter lorries took to roads nationwide, the Met Office said freezing air from Russia is primed to clash with moist air from the Atlantic, triggering snow from Sunday.
It’s the same weather pattern responsible for the bitter 2009-10 winter, the coldest for 31 years when transport networks were crippled and planes grounded. Icy easterly winds will sweep across Britain with everywhere at risk of wintry showers from the weekend and “significant snowfall” over high ground in Wales and the North.
Forecaster Charlie Powell said: “By Sunday and into Monday we are seeing cold air drawn in from the North-east which is pushing against colder air from the Atlantic. It is going to turn much colder and will be quite frosty as early as Saturday.

The Sun burst into life today and according to SpaceWeather.com. "there was a wave of ionization rippling through the upper atmosphere over Europe" the above chart was produced from Dave Gradwell, it has coincided, maybe coincidently, maybe not, with today's events in Alaska
This active period was NOT forecast as a Pier Corbyn "Red Warning" R4/R5 period and there is also no current indication of a "power up" of tropical storms going on, although for the past two days we have seen a CAT1 being present.
This looks as if it could be the start of bigger events to come, maybe this is a second peak for SC24?...more to follow
To illustrate the growing spottiness of the sun (SpaceWeather.com), each active region in this Jan. 5th image from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory is circled (click SpaceWeather.com link for latest image of the Sun)
The most active sunspot so far is emerging over the sun's northeastern limb. Crackling witth flares, it unleashed an M1.7-class eruption on Jan. 5th at 09:34 UT that sent a wave of ionization rippling through the upper atmosphere over Europe. More flares appear to be in the offing; stay tuned....

[Image/Graph -
SpaceWeather.com]
The above graph from SpaceWeather.com is clear that the NOAA-led Solar Cycle Prediction Panel (red line) had absurdly overestimated solar activity in the current cycle 24. I would say:
1. Looking at those NOAA predictions they were obviously daft with abrupt changes in smoothed slope and curvature which makes one wonder what procedures they used to make these estimates.
2. Low solar cycles generally are longer than strong ones so even though some are saying the peak of 24 may have now passed it is reasonable to expect another (low) peak in this cycle - maybe around turn of 2013-14.
NOTE in an even cycle the activity - temp correlation is much weaker than in an odd cycle. So even if sunspot numbers go up by some amount there can still be plenty of solar-lunar driven extra cold.
