I almost feel sorry for Al Gore. Almost
Al Gore is of course the former Vice President, the inventor of the internet, and the subject of the movie "A Love Story
". But perhaps Al Gore's most famous pursuit of the last few years has been the subject of global warming. He's dedicated his life to this and will do anything to help the cause, kind of
. However, the latest news from the world of science (true science that is) is that the centerpiece of Al Gore's pseudo-science "documentary", An Inconvenient Truth, was the exploding temperatures over the last 100 years and the notion that if it continues, polar bears will soon need sunscreen. This graphic is generally referred to as "the hockey stick", because it shows global temperatures relatively flat over the last 1,000 years until us evil Americans started driving SUV's and pouring out carbon dioxide line Chardonnay at a Nancy Pelosi party.
The "hockey stick" is the result of research from Dr. Michael Mann, who is a professor at the University of Massachusetts. Global temperature data is only available in measured tabulation from about the last 100-150 years. So, to determine global temperatures for the past 1,000 years, you have to use "proxies" or other areas of nature that can show the results of the variance in temperatures. In the case of Dr. Mann's research, he used tree ring and other data. The theory is that in warm temperatures, trees grow faster, which shows thicker tree rings and in cold temperatures, tree rings are thinner. A detailed analysis of Dr. Mann's work and the problems with this research can be found here
