A reanalysis of U.S. temperature station data shows temperatures are rising only half as much as claimed by the U.S. Historical Climatology Network (USHCN) and other government overseers of temperature data. The reanalysis is the first using the Siting Classification System devised by the MATEO-France French national meteorological service and recently approved by the World Meteorological Organization.
The new analysis, conducted by a team of scientists led by temperature station expert Anthony Watts, shows government overseers are improperly reporting double the temperature increase that is occurring in the real world. Fully 92 percent of the overstated temperature rise results from erroneous and scientifically unjustified government “adjustments” to the raw temperature data.
The new analysis shows U.S. temperatures rose only 0.155 degrees Celsius per decade from 1979 through 2008 according to high-quality surface temperature stations. The 0.155 degree increase is substantially less than is claimed by government temperature overseers, and it is sufficiently moderate to rebut fears of an imminent global warming crisis. The U.S. temperature increase from 1979 through 2008 is even less worrisome when considering that temperatures over the oceans are warming at a slower pace than temperatures over land, and that global temperatures cooled during the 30 years prior to 1979.
PRESS RELEASE – July 29th, 2012 12PM PDT – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
A reanalysis of U.S. surface station temperatures has been performed using the recently WMO-approved Siting Classification System devised by METEO-France’s Michel Leroy. The new siting classification more accurately characterizes the quality of the location in terms of monitoring long-term spatially representative surface temperature trends. The new analysis demonstrates that reported 1979-2008 U.S. temperature trends are spuriously doubled, with 92% of that over-estimation resulting from erroneous NOAA adjustments of well-sited stations upward. The paper is the first to use the updated siting system which addresses USHCN siting issues and data adjustments.
The new improved assessment, for the years 1979 to 2008, yields a trend of +0.155C per decade from the high quality sites, a +0.248 C per decade trend for poorly sited locations, and a trend of +0.309 C per decade after NOAA adjusts the data. This issue of station siting quality is expected to be an issue with respect to the monitoring of land surface temperature throughout the Global Historical Climate Network and in the BEST network.
Today, a new paper has been released that is the culmination of knowledge gleaned from five years or work by Anthony Watts and the many volunteers and contributors to the SurfaceStations project started in 2007.

The reconstruction provides a high-resolution representation of temperature patterns in the Roman and Medieval warm periods, but also shows the cold phases that occurred during the Migration Period and the later Little Ice
This is what global cooling really looks like – new tree ring study shows 2000 years of cooling – previous studies underestimated temperatures of Roman and Medieval Warm Periods

Top American science blog challenges maverick British forecaster to beat the best of the rest in a July shootout. Piers Corbyn of Weather Action takes the test in a month he predicts will be “terrible” and “full of extremes.”
The WeatherAction front man is boldly predicting that July 2012 will show, “Ongoing extremes and major contrasts across USA and Europe and associated large amplitude swings in the Jet Stream are aspects of pre-Little Ice Age weather patterns as the world descends towards a new Little Ice Age of a colder climate caused by low solar activity especially around 2020-45.”
Carnival Barker Makes Fantastic Claims
Anyone and everyone may use Corbyn’s predictions and partake in the test after WUWT’s Anthony Watts threw down the gauntlet after labeling Corbyn a “carnival barker” who makes “fantastic claims.” But even cynic Anthony Watts appears to concede that if Corbyn wasn’t any good he wouldn’t still be in business. [1.]
Piers is very much a betting man as evidenced when Britain’s biggest bookmakers, William Hill, banned him after he cleaned up with a slew of correct forecasting bets. The avuncular Londoner proclaims, “WeatherAction forecasts are about getting the best long range picture for useful decision making and they work and win on scientific bets. Farmers use them to see around when is there a chance of dry time for harvest/rain, etc.”
There has been an exchange of words between Piers Corbyn and Anthony Watts at WUWT below.....First news of the Jet Stream location, just download the RT link and listen to what Piers has to say in this interview about the Russian Floods

(i) There are a number of very foolish ignorant churlish remarks some from people I thought better of but nearly all from the usual dishonest standard Met / warmist freaks, which should be dealt with.
(ii) Nevertheless the main point of posting there is to get through to people who say nothing and need to be informed of the unique applicability of our forecasts to decision making and better warnings. Real WeatherAction users KNOW what they have to say.
Proponents of global warming alarmism place heavy reliance on the temperature record of the United States, probably the world’s best data set. They say that the record shows significant warming in the 20th century. Most global warming realists have accepted this claim, but have questioned whether this particular temperature trend–the Earth has been getting either warmer or cooler, sometimes on a far greater scale, for millions of years–has much to do with human activity.
What is less well known is that the alarmists do not rely on raw temperature data collected by American weather stations. Rather, the alarmists adjust the data before they publish it.

This latest news article from WUWT should be called IceGate, no doubt James Delingpole will put a name to it soon and I also would have thought we will see more about this in a couple of days from Christopher Booker, well done to Anthony in spotting this latest scandal.....GR
Having read the recent Don Easterbrook two part reply at WUWT (link part1 & link part2) I am a little confused about what it is that can and can't be supported at WUWT.
For those of you who have followed the rebuttal against Shakun et al. (Nature paper claiming that CO2 preceded late glacial warming) I have to ask myself how can Anthony Watts support this argument when he also says CO2 drives temperature!
John O'Sullivan and the Slayers (good name for a rock and roll band) support evidence that there is no such mechanism in existence in the Earths atmosphere to drive any warming and just like Don Easterbrook, support the science that CO2 follows a temperature increase. So it then becomes a bit of a mystery as to why Anthony Watts will not support John O'Sullivan and the Slayers in the same way.
Those of you who have read the recent blog from WUWT may not have noticed that the article has missed a trick about the USA’s record warm March 2012.
There WAS some “global warming" and the "Cause & Effect" was there to be seen by NASA but NOT Anthony Watts and Roy Spencer!
Anthony and Roy, just like the UK Met Office & NOAA mix up "Cause with the "Effect" often, stating the "Cause" of any warming during March was from the Earth and it's Oceans. The "Cause" of "Climate Change" from March was from the "Effect" of the Sun's "solar wind". It's the "Effect" of the solar wind that changed the Earth's climate in that period. The way Anthony and Roy have put their article together misses this point, they make a case for the "Effect" being the "Cause"!
And here it is the "Cause" of the March warming as per this YouTube from Nasa:
I noticed that the "Colemans Corner" at KUSI.com has had a recent makeover and lists several MUST SEE YOUTUBES, here is a complete interview from John Coleman with Meteorologist Anthony Watts. The YouTube's are full of interesting MUST READ/SEE facts about weather stations, and Anthony also throws in a comment about co2 having a "little" effect on climate ....GR
John Colman's Corner at KUSI: Anthony Watts, a hero of mine, is as interesting a person as you will meet in a lifetime. It was my pleasure to have him come to our KUSI News studio for an interview for the "Global Warming: Meltdown" program. Not only did I interview him, but most importantly, he presented his entire Surfacestations.org Powerpoint presentation as an answer to my second question.
Anthony Watts is an American broadcast weather presenter (AMS sealholder retired), editor of the blog "Watts Up With That?", owner of the weather graphics company Intelliweather, and founder of the SurfaceStations.org project that documents the problems with weather observation stations across the United States. He also is a meteorologist for a radio station in Northern California
