Back to basics! Temperature Data

Postby Mike Davis » Thu Apr 08, 2010 5:08 pm

Ross McKitrick has a opinion piece related to Gate Keeping in publications that he experienced attempting to get a paper published. I found the paper on the home page here and was linked to SPPI here:
http://scienceandpublicpolicy.org/image ... e_IPCC.pdf
It is an interesting read regarding what some claim does not exist: "Censorship". The point of this thread is the underlying point of his paper: The surface temperature has problems due to biased interpretation. Without relatively good temperature data for the recorded period the entire IPCC report is based on wishful thinking as there is nothing to compare any other claims to.
The second point is the issue of what time period to base an anomaly on if we had a fairly decent temperature record. BIG IF!
I think the temperature record can be teased out as I have seen some attempts to do just that.
Secondly:With the knowledge that regional oscillations vary on average 60 years we should determine each region separately based on a 100 year minimum, longer would be better. Then finding a natural range of temperatures for each region we can begin to study if there is some climate change to be concerned about.
There are all kinds of alarm bells ringing and I hope Chicken Little and Company run out of steam soon.

Temperature anomalies are themselves anomalous.

I have no problem with finding an average of the mean for a period of time representing climate.

I do have a problem with the lack of quality control in equipment, siting, and evaluation methods.
I do have a problem with the time period chosen to represent climate when it is known that regional osculations / cycles are longer than 30 years which would make 30 years part of a trend. the lower portion of the cycle, or the higher portion of the cycle. If I wanted to show the globe is currently warming I would attempt to find the lowest portion of the cycle to represent climate! That is why the MET office says not to change the base period because the anomaly would not look as bad if another period was picked.( That was in the e-mails).
I do have a problem with the use of historic sea surface data when they measured anything but sea surface. How much mixing occurs next to a moving boat? What difference would the length of the boat make? What are the differences in the depth of engine intakes between all the ships that used that method for measurements?
By observing the ENSO, SOI, and PDO we can see where problems exist with finding an average mean for less than 60 years or even finding an average mean without having stationary measuring locations.
It would be better to determine a range of natural temperatures by region and season or a natural range of anomalies to be expected in specific regions. I picked the region where I live because of historical climate. I also decided not to live in other regions because of the historic regional climate in those areas.
