This is a marvelous interview in which Piers sets -- yet again -- the record straight on the climate change debate. The overwhelming majority of evidence clearly shows that NATURAL cycles bring about at least 96 percent of the climate changes on the planet. Of course, some Urban Heat Island effect do cause some distortions in temperature readings (compared with country-side locations), and yes, deforestation at an alarming rate can cause local to regional changes in precipitation and temperature trends. In addition, some "modernization" in agricultural techniques can make flooding worse. But again, those anthropogenic changes make up for less than 5% of the global climate pattern on an annual and multi-year basis. But, the climate record from ice-core research, paleoclimatology, and other scientific analyses (many of which are "hushed" by Mainstream Media and many "pro-government" organizations / websites) prove beyond any doubt that the theory of "Global Warming" is a complete and utter farce with only one false mission -- to confuse the public and to set a new course for taxing people based on their carbon output.

Dear scientists, please, formulate your private opinion very accurate when you give an interview. Take into account that most people know nothing about possible(!) influence of space weather on weather. They are very far from scientific debates (lasting for many years) - how solar activity impacts weather. Yes, there are some evidences for tropospheric temperature and cloudiness dependence on solar cycle. But these ties are just probabilistic, we can not predict correctly where and even when this will happen. The satisfactory mechanism is not found till now.
Some gross errors in understanding of space weather: “A tremendous amount of activity on the sun” occurs approximately every 11 years, but Russian heat wave is an extraordinary event. “Particles from the sun” can not reach the earth because of magnetospheric (as well as neutral atmospheric) shield.
There is a model of solar wind heating of thermosphere and driving ionosperic currents, which could influence local weather. But this is merely a model, an attempt of explanation of observed moderate correlations between space weather changes and some meteorological parameters.
Anyway, there was nothing extraordinary in solar wind in summer 2010. I am sorry, but we can not consider solar activity as only cause (or main cause) of Russian heat wave.

Just because one does not understand how something happens does not mean it cannot happen.

I do not understand how an egg turns into a chicken, but it does - or rather it can do given the right circumstances. A stone however even though it looks the same does not turn into a chicken even if sat on by a mother hen for the same time as an egg.

The earth-magnetososphere lunar system is not well understood but it's relationship with the sun is very sensitive - like an egg, rather than a stone, to a mother hen. Given the right circumstances we can predict when somethings will happen - rather like predicting when an egg will hatch.

We understand the difference between eggs and stones but standard meteorology's attitude to the sun-earth relationship is like saying eggs are stones.

You, or us, not having a full mechanism does not prevent reliable forecasting and, no it is not a probabilistic forecasting process. We have sufficient understanding of these relationships to enable reliable predictions to be made (with 85% success rate for predicting extreme events against a luck level of less than 10%).

1) You misunderstand the nature of prolonged weather states in the world.
These are caused essentially by certain things NOT happening rather than something extraordinary. The JET STREAM being 'stuck' or 'frozen' in a pretty stationary state for a long period gave you the prolonged South wind and exceptional heat. THIS (quasi) stationary state was maintained by a balance of solar, lunar and stratospheric effects which prevented normal fluctuations in jet stream {ie waves in the jet stream (=Rossby waves) were stationary}.

2) We (using SLAT) predicted WHEN some pretty extraordinary things would happen to solar-activity and solar-magentic lunar relations which would upset this balance. They happened when we said with the results we predicted.

3)You not noticing what might have happened does not mean in any way there was ANY other cause

4) If there was an Earth bound cause (other than eg the stratospheric factor I mentioned which in the end is solar driven) please tell us what you think it was.
- Was something extraordinary going on with CO2 levels? Of course not!
In the end CO2-mongers (and I am not saying you are one) have no explanation for ANYTHING. How can CO2 freeze the jet stream then unfreeze it coincidentally when we said it would unfreeze - preceded by a double sunspot solar flare and a Sudden Ionospheric Disturbance (SID). Did driving a car past the Kremlin cause that solar flare?
Claims that CO2, or its supposed related global warming when the world is in fact cooling, cause extreme weather states or events are anti-scientific baseless drivel with no evidence in fact, theory or logic; and scientists should not give this nonsense any quarter but have a duty to denounce it at every opportunity.

Dear Piers,

The tail about an egg, a chicken and a mother hen is very good for journalists, but we are researchers, so let’s speak in scientific terms. You did not comment any my statement on physics of space weather - weather relations. Why? I would like to start scientific discussion on the base of your scientific papers or real prognostic model, but you do not give such a possibility to your opponents. Interviews, videos and two-sheets posters are not arguments in professional dispute.
Practically all prognoses of respected scientific centers are free. Why must I pay for your forecast? If you want to prove your case, open your prognostic database for anybody.
Piers, please, understand, I am not your adversary. I agree that the cause of Russian heat wave was not CO2.
I am glad that somebody tries to find some non-classic way for weather prediction. I even can suppose that impact of space weather on ionosphere and neutral atmosphere was ONE of the causes of the heat wave stop. By the way, what about its beginning? It is obviously that heat waves stop one day. Surely this could coincide with anything - solar flares, hurricanes on the other side of the globe, meteor showers, somebody’s birthday etc. Correlation between two events is not proof of “cause and effect”!
There were several flares during two months of Russian heat wave. Sudden Ionospheric Disturbances could occur several times per day without any flares. Why did you decide that 14 August flare and consequent SIC is the cause of Russian heat wave stop?
I am afraid that your attempt to explain very complex process by one doubtful cause can discredit the method, which would be useful as a part of classical weather models.

I extended my note above yours before your comment above appeared (a cross over in cyber space!).
I thought you asked for more understandable explanations, and note TV interviews cannot easily go into everything desired because of their popular nature. What's wrong with mother hens anyway?
Anyway the test of what we do is what works. The full(er) explanations are complex but you have some above and there are many things we do not yet understand.
