Magnetic fields snaking over the sun's northeastern limb erupted on August 18th around 01:02 UT. The M5.5 class eruption was not Earth-directed, but it could herald a significant uptick in geoeffective solar activity as the new active region turns toward Earth in the days ahead.

BTW: This was meant to be quiet period of solar activity (The Period of the August "New Moon") - I guess this solar flare was unexpected as far as the monthly Piers Corbyn "Red Warning" was concerned. Hurricane "Gordon" has now developed into a cat 1 as a result of this event......more to follow

Now keen followers of Piers would know that he promised that the 17th August would see the jet stream move dramatically south over France or even Iberia and stay there.
Well, now it is the 19th so giving the day leeway that Piers always wants lets see where the jet stream is today.

Nicely over Ireland as we can see and whats more it is forecast to remain in the vicinity of the UK save for a few short-lived dives south in the base of deep troughs.
Still further south than it should be relative to long term climatology but where it has mostly been this summer and indeed the past two summers.
So at the moment, it looks like Piers's forecast is failing.
