Astrophysics v Meteorology: WeatherAction expecting another cold blasts to return early Feb driven by new Sudden Stratospheric Warming!

Before I go through the above Piers Corbyn "Red Warning" period for the end of January/Start of February it's worth looking at what the Met office has had to say for the same period. As you will see I have collected the past THREE days worth of forecasts just to show you how dificult it is for them to remain with a clear understanding as to what the weather will be at the end of next week.

Poor old Piers does not have this luxury, he nails his forecast to the mast and keeps it there unless the Sun does something unexpected, as it has done during so the past few days!

The latest Met Office forecast is at the top.... it looks to me they have read the WeatherAction.com forecast (but I could be wrong:)

This is the link for the Met Office 30 day forecast: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/uk_forecast_alltext.html it updates twice a day, the following text will change

This is the Met Office UK Outlook for Friday 1 Feb 2013 to Sunday 10 Feb 2013: posted at 1123 on Sun 27 Jan 2013

Conditions are expected to remain unsettled with spells of wet and windy weather interspersed by colder, clearer, showery conditions. Some heavy rain at times, with western parts perhaps seeing the heaviest and most persistent rain. Meanwhile, showers may be heavy at times and are also likely to be wintry, particularly over higher ground in the north, and increasingly so later in the period. Often on the windy side, risk occasional gales in the exposed north and west. Daytime temperatures often near normal but milder during the cloudier, rainy spells whilst during clearer, showery spells temperatures perhaps below average at times. Risk of frost by night during the clearer interludes, continuing ice risk where rain or showers persist overnight.

Article continues below this advert:

This is the Met Office UK Outlook posted a day earlier for Thursday 31 Jan 2013 to Saturday 9 Feb 2013 posted 1207 on Sat 26 Jan 2013

Conditions late next week and onwards through the following week are expected to remain unsettled with spells of cloudy but milder weather with outbreaks of rain interspersed by clearer, showery interludes. Some heavy rain at times, with western parts perhaps seeing the heaviest and most persistent rain. Meanwhile, showers are also likely to be wintry over higher ground, especially later when showers may also turn wintry at times to some lower levels too. Often on the windy side, risk occasional gales in the exposed north and west. Daytime temperatures often near normal but milder during the cloudier, rainy spells whilst during clearer, showery spells temperatures perhaps below average at times later. Risk of frost by night during the clearer interludes.

And this is what they had to say TWO days ago:

UK Outlook for Wednesday 30 Jan 2013 to Friday 8 Feb 2013: Posted 1130 on Fri 25 Jan 2013

Unsettled weather throughout much of this period, with spells of rain, interspersed with clearer, showery interludes, for many areas and occasional hill snow in the north. The heaviest, and most prolonged spells of rain will tend to be in the west or southwest, with the best of any drier, brighter weather towards the east. It will also be windy at times, with a risk of gales, especially in the north and west, perhaps even severe gales in the far west and northwest. Generally mild at first, then temperatures falling close to the seasonal average in many parts, with overnight frosts in clearer, quieter spells and it will feel cold in the strong winds and rain.

So, you can see from the above how easy it is to make a week longrange forecast and change it each day.

Now the Piers Corbyn forecast for the End of January/Start Febuary

This is another top level event, an R5+ it is ROUND 2 for the R5+ we have seen already, this is the link for ROUND 1 Astrophysics v Meteorology (Piers Corbyn v Met Office) - Round 1 posted at CR 14th January

The following is posted on his website WeatherAction.com:

Piers Corbyn, astrophysicist of WeatherAction said "Although the weather period 26-28 Jan has turned less-cold/ milder than our forecast we expect (75% confidence) a reversion to our forecast first issued 5 weeks ago in the next weather period which was Jan29 to Feb3 and which will be postponed a day or so. Standard Met Maps will become modified by effects of a renewed Sudden polar Stratospheric Warming (SSW) which upsets circulation and will give more N'ly blasts into Britain/Ireland & Europe. These developments are not obvious yet but it is noteworthy that the polar stratosphere temperarure is still well above normal* after our confirmed sudden very rapid warming around 17/18th Jan: * http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/stratosphere/temperature/30mb9065.gif

Have Your Say

Except that the MO is consistent in its forecast for unsettled conditions. There has and will continue to be changes in the details as the lead time decreases but the general sentiment stays the same. To say this is a changing forecast is nit picking in the extreme.

When Piers says rain at the start of the Olympics and you say it was only a breif shower, that's what I call "nit picking":)
Posted by Elim (Twitter) on Jan 27th 2013, 4:08 PM EST
Piers said there would be a 'deluge' that is several warp factors off the brief shower that occurred and was correctly forecast by the MetO.
Posted by Tom Richards (Twitter) on Jan 27th 2013, 4:34 PM EST
I suppose it is nit picking when the forecast is for it to be dry and it snows.

It's funny how the memory of the event keeps "flooding" back:)

WeatherAction expecting cold blasts and blizzards to return early Feb driven by new Sudden Stratospheric warming end Jan / start Feb

Piers is still going for his early February blizzard despite all evidence to the contrary.

You have to admire his tenacity if nothing else. I like the phrase less cold he uses. Less cold? try positively mild with temperatures in the low teens on Tuesday.

A strong Atlantic jet has become established and that is the driving force for our weather for at least the next seven days which takes us to the end of Pier's blizzard period. EC suggests an omega block developing after that but we have seen those before come to nothing.

CO2 sceptic,

Thanks for post. I urge people to also visit our WeatherAction website posting including many observer reports around Britain, Ireland and Europe on these matters:
http://bit.ly/XgdMKd

As far as comments from the deluded duo I think they need medical help.
Readers might like to reminisc on the early Olympics:
http://www.weatheraction.com/docs/WANews12No35.pdf
http://www.weatheraction.com/docs/WANews12No36.pdf
It is a touchy subject for the warmista-moddelistas.

Note the facts,
(i) WeatherAction actual forecast for the start of Olympics was:
"A high risk of major thunderflashes, torrential rain and hail pose potential problems for Olympic Opnening Ceremony on 27th (July)"
(ii) Met Office forecast oscillated but 12 hours ahead they said "dry".
(iii) 'The heavens opened' in and near the stadium according to TV or/and other reports inside and outside nearby on the Opening Evening.
The Met Office said that they had only measured a small amount of rain somewhere else. SO WHAT? That was somewhere else and anyway it was rain or was it 'dry rain' as in their 'floods in a drought'?!.
(iv) MO forecast 12 hours ahead failed and WeatherAction's from 6 weeks ahead "..high risk of...potential problems..." was confirmed - except for those for those in need of a reality satnav.

Thanks Piers

Once again the MO forecast was for a risk of a shower early in the evening but the risk diminishing and the chances were that the ceremony would be dry. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED.

It is Piers who is deluded who thinks that a shower 40 minutes before the ceremony which barely wetted the rain gauge constitutes a deluge. There was no hail and no problems made to the ceremony.
Posted by Mr Fendster (Twitter) on Jan 28th 2013, 2:36 AM EST
Balderdash ... you could use that excuse for any day of the week and the risk would equally diminish or occur.
Posted by Elim (Twitter) on Jan 28th 2013, 2:46 AM EST
This is why Piers isn't taken seriously.
“We’re very confident that there will be a lot of rain – a deluge, really – during the entire Olympic period, and we are 80 per cent sure that the Opening Ceremony itself will feature heavy rain, including hail and thunder.”
0.2mm Piers during the Opening Ceremony. A couple of days when some rain fell otherwise glorious sunshine.
Posted by Piers Corbyn (Twitter) on Jan 28th 2013, 3:09 AM EST
Tom, Elim try reading.

FACT WeatherAction forecast "High risk of torrential etc and potential threat etc..." (see the pdf). Quoting of an excited (by a sub-editor) media version is dishonest. Any forecast must be assessed by
(a) What it said, not withstanding typos etc,
(b) What happened.
You do neither.

FACT There was a high risk..., confirmed by:

(a) such happened in the immediate area and SE England (which the Met office had said 12hrs before would be dry) (see pdf maps thereon)

(b) there was torrential rain that evening on and near the stadium. This was what Boris asked about. You noting of this being just before the formal announcemnt or whatever is just pathetic slimey slithering. The 'pre-event' was hours long and the step from that to formal was pretty seamless. People still got wet.

Oh and what about your MO forecast 12 hours ahead under (a) and (b)? Carefully now step by step. For (b) you dont have to believe the BBC showing a downpour on TV you had your raingauge somewhere.

DISTORTION. Who said 'deluge'? Get it right! we forecast high risk of 'torrential' and the media reported:
http://www.standard.co.uk/olympics/olympic-news/london-2012-olympics-here-comes-the-rain-with-perfect-timing-the-heavens-open-on-stadium-7982443.html LOOK AT THE PIC. No Met Office rain gauge there.
Of course you maybe dont realize these sorts of events can be very localized. This one hit the stadium area and missed your insufficient monitoring effort of one little rain gauge wherever it was.

QUESTION Do you get pleasure from telling lies? Do you lie to your children (if any), wife (if any), friends...?

On the evening of the Olympic Opening Ceremony there were only o.2 millimeters of "rain" recorded at the "Olympic Park North" MetOffic Weather station. This equates to the merest few drops on an otherwise warm, dry and still evening.

The MetOffice had consistently warned of the "chance of a shower" from days before. They were correct.

For Piers to claim that his forecast of "torrential rain, major thunderflashes, and hail" to have been correct and add this to his "85% accuracy" track record, is disingenuous.
Posted by Co2sceptic (forum) on Jan 28th 2013, 4:25 AM EST
Come on guys its just "water under the bridge"

Let's move forward to the forecast for the end of the week, there is a R5+ event and let's see what actually happens and then fight over who said what
Posted by Elim (Twitter) on Jan 28th 2013, 4:32 AM EST
Piers the quote I gave was from your friend Boris Johnson, who in turn was quoting from a conversation with you. So what are you saying now, that Boris Johnson misrepresented what you said? That what was written was actually by an excited sub editor?

Here's the forecast from the Met Office for the day of the Opening Ceremony:
"Although there will be showers through the day, these are likely to clear away through the evening. This will leave a mainly fine end to the day with just a low risk of a shower passing directly over the Stadium during the ceremony."
It's exactly what happened Piers with the official rain gauge recording 0.2mm. This wasn't a deluge or even heavy rain. It certainly wasn't thunder, hail and floods.
You can try and mislead the public all you like Piers, but apart from a few acolytes no one is fooled.

Oh, and your summary of the end of the recent cold spell is also complete fabrication.
