Below is an awesome video capturing the C8.7 solar flare around Sunspot 1667. During the eruption, a blob of plasma above the blast site is captured spinning like a Tornado vortex. Most of us Sun lovers hope for X-Class solar flares, however even a C-Class flare can be fascinating. A slow motion version is also included.
EARTH-DIRECTED ERUPTION - SpaceWeather.com: The magnetic canopy of decaying sunspot AR1667 erupted this morning (Feb. 6th @ 00:21 UT), producing a long duration C9-class solar flare and hurling a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space. According to first-look images from NASA's STEREO-B spacecraft, the CME appears to be heading in the general direction of Earth...click SpaceWeather.com link for Video link
A powerful and shallow earthquake off the Solomon Islands has triggered a tsunami in the South Pacific.
The 8.0 magnitude earthquake, followed by at least five aftershocks, struck at a very shallow depth of only three miles about 200 miles east of Kira Kira in the Solomons, prompting reports that several villages had been destroyed.
Shortly later, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii issued a tsunami warning for the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, New Caledonia, Kosrae, Fiji, Kiribati, and Wallis and Futuna islands.
A tsunami watch was issued for the rest of the South Pacific nations, including Indonesia, New Zealand and Australia, however, the Australian Weather Bureau said there was no threat to the nation's mainland or islands.
France issued a tsunami alert for its Pacific territory New Caledonia, saying the tsunami was scheduled to hit at 3pm local time (4am GMT). Residents near the coast were being advised to evacuate immediately.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre warned that the earthquake could cause a "destructive tsunami" near its epicentre. A surge of 3ft was recorded in one part the Solomon Islands.
"Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated," said the tsunami centre.
"It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicentre and could also be a threat to more distant coasts."
An official at the disaster management office in Vanuatu said there were no reports of damage or injuries there. The PTWC said an 11cm-high wave had hit the islands, and was forecast to also hit Papua New Guinea, but would ne non-destructive....click above Telegraph.co.uk link for more
The WeatherAction Solar/Lunar forecast for this period was meant to be an R3 so I regard this event as a "rouge" solar flare. We will have to see if Piers Corbyn issues an update to his forecast
Comments from Piers Corbyn:
I had a chat on the phone with Piers Corbyn just now about this event and he was not that surprised the M8 EQ has happened.
This, he now informs me, was a result of the possibility of the R5+ going on even longer then his original extra two days, and as we can see now from todays event, he should have adjusted this by THREE DAYS!
I will leave this as a MISS as far as the stats are concerned as he has the rest of the year to produce more high level "R" forecast....well done Piers anyway.

I noted that the major weather event impact days were from 25th Jan through to 31st Jan, and 4-5th Feb. The quietest weather period was the 1st to 3rd of Feb.

Ulric, are you saying that when Piers made the SECOND R5+ forecast for the end January/Early February the Sun didn't comply with the rules he had set or are you saying your own personal forecast was correct and that the results from weatheronline show the split you forecast and Piers didn't allow for this situation

I know! Fair enough that Piers only wants positive affirming comments on his site, but that was a polite and genuine question! I can't understand why no-one will answer it?

"An attack from the ‘ET’ gang, and counter attack, were allowed but equally in future these will likely be ELIMinated before starting. The purpose of their attacks is wrecking of discussion and we have no intention of expecting serious contributors to look at issues in the midst of a pub-brawl rather than a quiet drink."

Or just betraying my American roots?
So, interesting observation by Ulric that the most severe weather didn't fit too comfortably in the R5 period. Seems like the EQ's are rebelling too!
