BRITAIN faces a “winter whiteout” this weekend with up to 6ins of snow falling across much of the country.

A torrential band of snow is set to sweep in on Sunday night bringing a week of misery with temperatures plummeting as low as -15C.

The Met Office has issued a near nationwide severe weather warning for snow on Sunday and into Monday morning, which is likely to bring “widespread disruption”.

Forecasters warned of “snowplough conditions” with chaos on roads, railways and at airports.

Jonathan Powell, of Vantage Weather Services, said fierce Arctic gales will whip up blizzards leading to deep snowdrifts on higher ground.

He said: “Starting on Sunday night and into Monday morning we are looking at a significant snow event.

“A system of rain moving from the west will meet cold air, turning to snow across the entire UK. A nationwide whiteout is on the cards with 6ins expected widely.

“Heavy snow will sweep across the whole of England, severe enough to spark school closures, and cripple the transport networks.”

Met Office forecaster Sarah Holland said: “There is the potential for widespread heavy snow, and people should be prepared for disruption.” Parts of the North and the east coast have already been blanketed with several inches of snow with gales whipping up blizzards.

Piers Corbyn, of WeatherAction, warned this weekend’s deluge will be “just the beginning of a very severe spell of winter weather”.

He said: “It is going to get significantly worse throughout the week. The whole country is looking at more snow, strong winds and blizzards with another major event next weekend.”

Leon Brown, meteorologist for The Weather Channel, said: “Over the coming weekend we will have quite a battle over the UK between moist and mild Atlantic air and the colder air mass over and to the east of the UK.

“Temperatures will remain cold next week, and where skies clear and winds are lighter in the West and North, temperatures overnight may drop to -8C to -10C. Perhaps -15C in the Cairngorms and Grampian area of Scotland.”

Netweather forecaster Paul Michaelwaite said: “Sunday sees the start of a more active spell with low pressure moving in, increasing the wind and bringing rain which is likely to turn to snow in places.

“There is some uncertainty over the track of the low and the distribution of the heaviest rain, sleet and snow.”
