Following a strong episode of "Burian" who in the first week of February has affected the entire European continent and the peninsula, causing a long period of heavy negative thermal anomalies, the waters of the Mediterranean Sea have undergone an intense process of cooling and many areas has been going up to the current month.
In most affected were precisely the Italian basins and a large chunk of central-western Mediterranean basin and to a lesser extent the eastern Mediterranean, where the negative temperature anomalies (SST -) were smaller.
The persistence for so long a period, these intense negative thermal anomalies of the surface waters of the "Mare Nostrum" has had important repercussions in weather / climate, but not only.

First it was noticed that the colder waters, especially the Tyrrhenian Sea and Ionian seas around Sardinia and Sicily, have been an inhibiting factor for the convective activity at sea and for the passage of perturbed systems and the various fronts "anabatici", both of Atlantic origin that from the north-African, (characterized by a prevalence of the motions within the ascending column of air) which, passing over a sea surface colder than normal have had access to a smaller amount of ready to supply the latent heat convective activity in the first burst of cold air at high altitude, causing the onset of furious storms or development stages of the spectacular "squall line" frontal-type (if associated with the advance of a cold front) or pre-frontal (in the hot sector, usually are generated when a "Warm Conveyor Belt" flows above the cold front giving rise to a strong instability).
Indeed, compared to the spring of last year, the central basin of the Mediterranean passed through many fronts in recent weeks have retained more features "catabatiche" (descendants with motions derived from the interaction with the Alpine orography).
