SUMMER is likely to be a complete washout as Britain endures the worst rain storms for 50 years, forecasters warned last night.
The battering the country will endure over the next three days – with a month’s worth of rain set to fall by Sunday – is likely to be followed by nearly three months of grey skies and deluges.
Forecasters fear the equivalent of five months of rain could fall by the end of June. They do not anticipate any significant hot spell until well into September.
Jonathan Powell, of Vantage Weather Services, said last night: “What we are looking at is an extremely unusual weather event.
“Apart from very brief spikes of heat during the summer, this is it for July and August.”
James Madden, of Exacta Weather, said the rest of the summer would be “unsettled” as long as the jet stream – which is responsible for the washout – refuses to budge.
