Rick Santorum slams 'reign of environmental terror' by Alex Guillen and Juana Summers
Thursday, February 9th 2012, 4:55 PM EST
Co2sceptic (Site Admin)
Liberal politicians and green groups are exaggerating the dangers of hydraulic fracturing to scare people and raise money, Rick Santorum said Thursday in a wide-ranging rant against environmental activists.

The failure of cap-and-trade legislation in 2009 was the “politicization of science,” Santorum said.

In fact, he added, the Republican Party is “the truth party.”

“You hear all the time, the left: ‘Oh, the conservatives are the anti-science party.’ No we’re not. We’re the truth party,” the former Pennsylvania senator said at a campaign event in Oklahoma City. “Because the left is always looking for a way to control you. They’re always trying to make you feel guilty so you’ll give them power so they can lord it over you. They do it on the environment all the time.”

Environmentalists use universal desires for clean water, clean air and conservation to “distort the truth in order to get you to give them authority.”

Foreword to Andrew Montford's Nullius in Verba: The Royal Society and Climate Change: Richard Lindzen: The Perversion Of Science

Foreword to Andrew Montford's Nullius in Verba: The Royal Society and Climate Change

Andrew Montford provides a straightforward and unembellished chronology of the perversion not only of The Royal Society but of science itself, wherein the legitimate role of science as a powerful mode of inquiry is replaced by the pretence of science to a position of political authority.

The simple chronology speaks for itself, though one cannot read it without thinking, at least, about the motivations. Already in the 19th century, gentleman scientists, like Darwin, noted the potential constraints on scientific inquiry that were associated with functioning within universities. The potential in recent years is obviously magnified by the near monopoly over science support exercised by governments. In the US, our National Academy of Science (NAS) has always had official status as adviser to the government. However, the role was relatively passive until the 1970s.

The 1970s saw a marked expansion of the National Research Council, the branch of the National Academy of Science responsible for responding to government requests. With the presidency of Frank Press (1981-1993), the staff of the NRC increased to over a thousand. Frank often boasted that The Royal Society was envious of the position of the NAS and the existence of its NRC. The global warming issue, it would appear, has offered The Royal Society the opportunity to rectify this situation.

Nevertheless, there are certain peculiarities of The Royal Society’s behavior that are perhaps worth noting. The presidents involved with this issue (May, Rees and Nurse) are all profoundly ignorant of climate science. Their alleged authority stems from their positions in the RS rather than from scientific expertise. This is evident in a variety of ways.

Alan Jones comments on what he believes to be the greatest swindle of our time: Climate Change.

It’s clear that the greatest moral challenge of our time now is standing up for the truth.

I think we all remember Prime Minister Rudd saying in 2007 "Climate change is the greatest moral challenge of our generation" or "Climate change is not just an environmental challenge ... climate change is an economic challenge, a social challenge, and actually it represents a challenge to the overall question of national security".

I think we all remember Prime Minister Rudd saying in 2007 "Climate change is the greatest moral challenge of our generation" or "Climate change is not just an environmental challenge ... climate change is an economic challenge, a social challenge, and actually it represents a challenge to the overall question of national security".

You mean a bloke with this kind of judgment is being thought of as the next Prime Minister.

The current Prime Minister Julia Gillard said in a speech in 2010 "With climate change, the number of droughts could increase by up to 40 per cent in eastern Australia and up to 80 per cent in south-western Australia within the next six decades".

James M. Taylor: Santorum Sends The Right Message On Global Warming
Wednesday, February 8th 2012, 5:42 PM EST
Co2sceptic (Site Admin)
A long-time source of frustration for many small-government Republicans has been politicians who buy into various subsidies, mandates, restrictions and other big-government “solutions” to speculative or nonexistent energy and environment problems. This frustration has continued throughout the Republican primary season as frontrunners Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich each have a history of supporting such big-government energy and environment policies. But the times may be a-changing. Rick Santorum has been emphasizing small-government energy and environment policies in recent weeks and the conservative base is responding.

Most visibly, Santorum is throwing down the gauntlet on global warming. While blasting Obama on global warming, he is also hitting Romney and Gingrich hard on the topic. “Both of them bought into the global warming hoax!” Santorum has taken to saying on the campaign trail and in media interviews.

Santorum’s strategy is powerful for two reasons. First, he has an unassailable record of questioning alarmist global warming claims and opposing carbon dioxide restrictions. Second, he is pressing the issue with a fervor that conveys clear and unmistakable sincerity.

True, Romney and Gingrich have been saying the right things lately on global warming and other energy/environment topics. Small-government Republicans hope they will govern in a manner that is consistent with their recent statements and pledges on these topics. But small-government conservatives have reason to be concerned.

Book: The Cold Sun: Why The Climate Catastrophe Won't Happen by Norbert Lossau, Die Welt

Image AttachmentAmazon Link, Die kalte Sonne, authored by Prof. Dr. Fritz Vahrenholt and geologist/paleontologist Dr. Sebastian Lüning.

For years he promulgated the IPCC’s key message. Now, the former environment senator and manager Fritz Vahrenholt has had a change of heart. In this interview, he explains his change of opinion.

In his new book "The Cold Sun. Why the climate catastrophe will not happen," Professor Fritz Vahrenholt, former environment senator and CEO of RWE Innogy, outlines his thesis that global warming will be significantly less substantial than previously thought. By the end of the century, he believes, there will be just an increase of one degree Celsius. The influence of the sun on the Earth's climate, however, has been significantly underestimated until now.

Welt Online: You have supported the IPCC’s paradigm for many years. Now you are publishing a book in which you questioned the doctrine of global climate change. How did this change of heart happen?

Vahrenholt: Yes, I was an active supporter of the CO2 theory. But then I had two pivotal moments that have inspired me to reassess my position.

First, I was invited in February 2010 as a scientific reviewer for the IPCC report on renewable energy in Washington. There, I realized that the drafting of the report was done in anything but a scientific manner. The report is littered with errors. At the end, representatives of Greenpeace edited the final version. The result was the nonsensical claim that 80 percent of total world energy needs can be met with renewable energy.

Reply to article: Judith Curry: Consensus or not (?): Updated by Donna Laframboise
Wednesday, February 8th 2012, 6:40 AM EST
Co2sceptic (Site Admin)
Is there or isn’t there a scientific consensus on climate change? And does it matter?

The dueling opinion pieces in the WSJ have spawned yet another insightful article. Richard Black has an article on the BBC blog entitled Climate consensus cracking open – or not. Excerpts:

In other words – in a meme that’s become very familiar over the last few years – “the consensus is cracking”.

It’s a troublesome meme in several ways.

First, and most obvious, is the absence of any evidence that it’s actually true. Certainly, since the “ClimateGate” affair there’s been criticism from within the scientific community about the practices of some climate scientists – but that’s very different from disputing their broad conclusions.

A second problem is the absence of clarity over which consensus we are talking about; consensus that the Earth is warming, consensus that greenhouse gas emissions are the main reason, or consensus that it’s a problem requiring urgent solution, to name but three?

Thirdly, is the fact that it may not matter very much.

Loopy Tuesday as Santorum's triple win throws Republican primary race into chaos by Toby Harnden
Wednesday, February 8th 2012, 6:28 AM EST
Co2sceptic (Site Admin)
As Lady Bracknell might have remarked: 'To lose a primary in Missouri, Mr Romney, may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose a primary in Missouri and a caucus in Minnesota looks like carelessness.' And to lose a caucus in Colorado as well is a real disaster. Not to mention the fact that all three losses were at the hands of Rick Santorum.

This could have been the kind of script Oscar Wilde would have conjured up for a Republican primary but it certainly wasn't the script that Mitt Romney drafted.

On election night in Florida, after scoring an impressive 15-point victory in Florida and trampling Newt Gingrich into the ground, the hope in Romneyworld was that February would be a sweep with momentum and organisation carrying the day.

All that's changed now. A win in Minnesota or Missouri could have been explained away as an aberration. But Colorado was a state that Romney won by 60 points to 18 over John McCain in 2008 and where he campaigned and spent money this time. Santorum won it by five points. For Santorum to win all three states is a real stunner.
