Peter Foster: Keystone vs. Religion (Climate change isn’t about policy as much as religion)

Climate change isn’t about policy as much as religion

Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman’s approval on Tuesday of the revised Keystone XL pipeline route provided some counterbalance to President Obama’s recommitment to the climate agenda in Monday’s inaugural speech, but the pipeline is still far from a shoo-in. Meanwhile, the renewed emphasis on climate change signals more comprehensive uncertainty for Canada/U.S. relations. The problem, as ever, is that climate change isn’t so much about policy as religion.

The ever-perceptive Adam Smith noted how political factions often recruit God to their cause. “Even to the great Judge of the universe,” wrote Smith, “they impute all their own prejudices, and often view that Divine Being as animated by all their own vindictive and implacable passions.” Mr. Obama left us in no doubt on Monday that God demanded action on climate. “That,” said Mr. Obama, “is how we will preserve our planet, commanded to our care by God.”

The speech confirms that Mr. Obama’s re-election — contrary to what an overwhelming majority of Canadians apparently think — is bad news for Canada, first in terms of what Mr. Obama’s rigid statism and fiscal fecklessness may do to the U.S. economy, and then in terms of policies that specifically affect Canada, primarily on energy and climate.

A common take on the inaugural speech was that it signalled a No More Mr. Post-Partisan Nice Guy. In fact, there never was such a guy. Mr. Obama’s attitude to opponents has always been dismissive. His self-righteous approach was summed up in the assertion that “We cannot mistake absolutism for principle or substitute spectacle for politics, or treat name-calling as reasoned debate.”

Maurice Strong sees the cratering of his Stewie Griffin-style plan to rule the world

The “failure” of Rio+20 is a cause for celebration, even if you can’t afford the champagne and foie gras that ecocrats served themselves as their hopes for “Sustainia” retreated into the policy fog. A mostly “B” list of government leaders (No Barack Obama. No David Cameron. No Stephen Harper. No Angela Merkel) was set to adopt a pablum-filled 283-point “vision” on Friday that was finalized before they arrived.

“[N]othing less than a disaster for the planet,” declared Nnimmo Bassey, Nigerian poet and chair of Friends of the Earth International. “[A]n epic failure,” claimed Kumi Naidoo, Greenpeace International executive director. ‘[A] colossal waste of time,” chimed in Jim Leape, international director-general of World Wildlife Fund.

An umbrella group of NGOs bemoaned the official text’s lack of mention of “planetary boundaries, tipping points or planetary carrying capacity,” the very shibboleth’s of radical environmentalism’s zero-sum thinking.

Peter Foster: No bravo for Rio+20

Canada is going to Rio+20 summit, despite its hostility to fossil fuels

The Rio+20 Earth Summit on Sustainable Development, which starts in two weeks, will be a farce, even if everybody keeps a straight face. The grand UN-based system conceived to co-ordinate the activities of all mankind has proved utterly unsustainable, a dysfunctional mess that generates nothing but endless meetings, agendas and reports.

That sustainable development would inevitably collapse under its own contradictions was inevitable. What is fascinating is why every country on Earth — including Canada — would earnestly have committed to a concept hatched by a cabal of ardent socialists. Equally fascinating is the almost universal reluctance to acknowledge the organizational disaster that has ensued.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade declared that the “composition of the Canadian delegation” was “still under consideration,” although apparently Environment Minister Peter Kent will be going, as will Quebec Premier Jean Charest. When I asked the spokeswoman for background information on Canada’s approach to Rio+20, she suggested that I file an access to information request. Doesn’t sound very transparent (a key tenet of sustainability), but then the federal government’s position does appear a little conflicted.

Peter Foster: Suzuki vs. the Senate — who’s silencing whom?

‘Silence and demonize’ could be the Suzuki foundation’s motto

Radical environmentalists tend not to be famous for their objectivity or sense of irony. Canada’s most famous eco-activist, David Suzuki, proved that this week by organizing a write-in campaign to protest a Senate inquiry into foreign institutional funding of Canadian political activism.

Independent researcher Vivian Krause unearthed more than $300-million of such eco-laundering, which has been used to campaign against B.C. fish farming and bring the Canadian forest industry to heel. Recently, both Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver fingered foreign funding in clogging up the regulatory process for the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline, the latest front in the green industry’s war against the oil sands.

The Suzuki-to-Senate form email ventriloquized that robo-senders were “disappointed by the recent attempts of some senators to silence and demonize those who don’t share their positions.” It suggested that the Conservative senators, led by Nicole Eaton, were trying to “stifle the voices of millions of Canadians.”
In fact, “Silence and demonize” could be the Suzuki foundation’s motto. On its website, right beside Tell the Senate to stop silencing environmental groups sits a piece by Mr. Suzuki with the headline Climate change denial isn’t about science, or even skepticism. The same article was recently published in The Huffington Post under the headline Deny Deniers their Right to Deny!

Peter Foster: ‘Fakegate’ latest climate clash

Document from skeptical think-tank turns out to have been forged.

A few weeks ago, a number of websites received copies of allegedly confidential documents from the Heartland Institute, a Chicago-based libertarian think-tank that organizes conferences featuring skeptics of catastrophic man-made climate change. Most of the documents, which purported to come from a “Heartland insider,” related to Heartland’s donors, but one was a “strategy” document that suggested that the institute was trying to subvert the teaching of climate science in schools. Here was the smoking gun that ardent warmists had long sought.

The problem was that the strategy document was a forgery. Soon afterwards, Peter Gleick, a prominent environmentalist and president of the Pacific Institute, admitted that he had obtained the genuine documents by imitating a Heartland board member. He claimed that he had received the strategy document separately. His ethical lapse (or crime) appeared the more egregious because he was chairman of the task force on ethics at the American Geophysical Union, and had previously addressed a congressional committee on scientific integrity. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Center for Science Education. He had also been the winner of a MacArthur “Genius” award.

Textual analysis of the smoking-gun strategy document led some to suggest that the likely author was Mr. Gleick himself, although this has not been proved. Megan McArdle of Atlantic magazine noted wryly that the document read “like it was written from the secret villain lair in a Batman comic. By an intern.”

Peter Foster: Political science at the academies

Image AttachmentThe perversion of science by the Royal Society and its Canadian counterpart

When Lord Robert May — a distinguished British population biologist — told a journalist: “I am the president of the Royal Society, and I am telling you the debate on climate change is over,” he was risking the reputation of the venerable institution he headed.

Presidents of national science academies are not meant to engage in ex cathedra statements, but to promote objective research.

However, according to a devastating report this week from the Global Warming Policy Foundation, the Royal Society — former home to Newton and Darwin — has adopted a stance of intolerant infallibility over climate science and, even less appropriately, over policy.

The report, Nullius in Verba: The Royal Society and Climate Change, by Andrew Montford, is important to Canada not merely because of the continued threat of climate alarmism, but because the Royal Society of Canada has twice attached its name to intensely political statements from its British counterpart.

The phrase “Nullius in verba,” the Royal Society’s motto, means “on the word of no one” and implies that science should always be determined by objectivity rather than the say-so of any “authority.” For ordinary folk like us, however, (including lazy and/or crusading journalists, and even scientists in other specialities) authority is all we usually have to go on, which explains the catastrophists’ relentless emphasis on the “consensus” of those 2,000-plus weighty “experts” who craft the reports of the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the IPCC.

Peter Foster: WWF’s tainted ‘witnesses’

The fund’s climate witness program is just another fundraising scheme, as indicated by that “Donate!” button

It is an established strategy among both the panjandrums of climate catastrophe and their media handmaidens either to ignore individual skeptics or to denigrate them en masse as “deniers” or shills for the fossil fuel industry. No surprise, therefore, that The Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star have so far contained not a peep about Donna Laframboise’s exposé of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), The Delinquent Teenager who was Mistaken for the World’s Top Climate Expert. However, the book has drawn an angry response from at least one bastion of climate alarmism, the WWF.

Ms. Laframboise’s book claims that the WWF — along with other environmental NGOs such as Greenpeace — has “infiltrated” the IPCC. The WWF subsequently issued a press release describing the assertion as “ludicrous.” Her “sole evidence” was “some overlap between some of the thousands of scientists who have worked for the IPCC and members of a scientific advisory panel to WWF’s climate witness scheme.”

Funny how even the most tenuous link between any individual skeptic and Big Oil or Big Coal is considered to taint all skepticism, and yet to point out the implications of the very significant “overlap” between a radical activist organization and the IPCC is “ludicrous.”

Claims that the deep oceans absorb the missing heat are an admission that temperatures have stalled

A study from the Boulder, Colo.-based National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) claims to have found all that missing heat from global warming’s “lost decade:” It’s lurking in Davy Jones’s locker.

According to official science, global temperatures were meant to rise this century in line with increasing levels of man-made carbon dioxide, but didn’t. Now the puzzle has allegedly been solved: the heat is more than 300 metres below the world’s oceans, where it appears conveniently safe from physical verification.

According to the study’s official press release, “deep oceans may absorb enough heat at times to flatten the rate of global warming for periods of as long as a decade — even in the midst of longer-term warming.”

Note “may” and “at times.” Note also how “periods as long as a decade” matches nicely with the (most recent) period of no warming that has to be explained (away).

The report, which claims that we should be prepared for several similar periods of non-warming in the coming century, “even as the trend toward overall warming continues,” is revealing on several counts. It amounts to a reluctant admission that global temperatures have indeed stalled. This fact has so far either been denied, ignored or buried beneath the claim that the past decade was still the hottest in the past 100 years (even if not by much).

Having a jobs policy is not necessarily synonymous with creating jobs

The Ptolemaic system of astronomy, which had the planets waltzing around the Earth in “compounded circles,” predicted celestial positions — sort of — for centuries. As time went on, however, the refinements needed to keep the system semi-functional turned it into a conceptual monster.

Enter Copernicus.

His heliocentric system, in which the Earth was just one of a number of orbiting planets, represented one of the great “paradigm shifts” — to use the term coined by Thomas Kuhn — in the history of science. The Darwinian theory of evolution by natural selection was another. In current times, “official” climate science is trying to ignore/fight off the Sun’s return to the central role in climate change.

What these two established — and one prospective — shifts have in common is that they all dented, or threaten to dent, man’s sense of his significance. Copernicus moved humanity from the centre of the universe to a planet circling a minor star in an unimaginably huge cosmos. Darwin further injured man’s self-esteem by pointing out that he was an evolved creature, albeit with the dubious gift of limited self-awareness. Solar theory not merely threatens to explode the notion that human carbon dioxide emissions are driving the climate, it comes linked to the rejection of the even greater conceit that climate control is possible via economic policy.

Reply to article: Peter Foster: Bureaucrats offer up green misinformation
Thursday, August 4th 2011, 5:50 AM EDT

Tuesday's Post contained a story about allegedly revealing "briefing notes" given to Peter Kent by his bureaucrats when he became Environment Minister eight months ago. The notes were obtained under an access-to-information request. By whom isn't clear.

Headlined "Canada lagging U.S. on climate, Kent warned," the story quoted Environment's mandarins' claims that "Climate change is the most serious environmental issue facing the world today."

In fact, the neophyte minister regurgitated this assertion virtually word for word in his maiden speech. Did he really believe it? Who knows? What we do know is that something rather significant happened to the Conservative government after Mr. Kent went to Environment: it won a parliamentary majority.

The March 2010 Speech from the Throne, when the Conservatives were in a minority, claimed that "Nowhere is a commitment to principled policy, backed by action, needed more than in addressing climate change." The June 2011, post-majority, version didn't mention climate change at all.

The Post's story quoted Clare Demerse, director of climate-change policy for the radical Pembina Institute, as questioning "whether Mr. Kent and his government had understood the warnings from the experts within the bureaucracy.. Unfortunately, the Harper government's track record since January, when these notes were written, gives us no evidence that the message got through."
