I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a storm this big before.
The storm shown here stretches west to east from Newfoundland to Portugal. Its southern tail (cold front) extends into the Caribbean and the north side of its comma head touches southern Greenland.
Not only is it big, but it’s also super intense – comparable to many category 3 hurricanes. The storm’s central pressure, as analyzed by the Ocean Prediction Center, is 953 mb. Estimated peak wave heights are around 25-30 feet.
AS Arctic Britain prepares to shiver for at least another month, a leading scientist today predicted the world was heading for another Ice Age.
Incredibly, British Summer Time officially starts tomorrow but millions of brassed off Brits pining for warmth will have to endure freezing temperatures and biting winds until May.
The misery will continue with daytime temperatures struggling to reach a bracing 5C (41F). The only ray of sunshine, forecasters said, is that it will stay dry.
As if the outlook wasn’t bleak enough already, meteorologists believe the shivering start to 2013 has been the coldest in more than 200 years.
More worryingly, the combination of sub-zero temperatures and heavy snow experienced across much of the country recently could be the prelude to a new Ice Age that will begin next year and last for 200 years.
Russian scientist Dr Habibullo Abdussamatov, of the St Petersburg Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory, painted the Doomsday scenario saying the recent inclement weather simply proved we were heading towards a frozen planet.
Dr Abdussamatov believes Earth was on an “unavoidable advance towards a deep temperature drop”. The last big freeze, known as the Little Ice Age, was between 1650 and 1850.
In October last year I had a play about with a Solar Cycle graph from informthepundits.wordpress.com, and added an overlay to show three solar cycle periods (SC12, 13 & 14), that as far as I know are not given any "minimum" status as the period was not identified as being "COLD". No, I'm not looking for any recognition about this period, and as far as I know neither is Piers Corbyn....but hey don't let that stop anyone from calling it "The Gabriel Near Minimum":)
I have now added another overlay to the original chart and also extended it with three fictitious shaped solar cycles (SC24, 25 & 26). All of these cycles are forecast to be lower then SC 23, and SC 24 is expected to be the highest of the three, be it the lowest one for 100 years! SC 25 WILL be lower then SC 24 as per latest estimate from NASA. SC 26 Is entered as similar level to SC 25 (my guess). This should bring the period up to around 2050, as you can see from above, this WILL BE A COOL/COLD period and NOT HOT as per the Met Office and the IPCC.
See below a rare photo from the winter of 1911, near the end of solar cycle 14, it makes a very good point about the "Gabriel Near Minimum".
From the above TropicalStormRisk.com chart it looks as if the recent Tropical Storm Seventeen has now been officially named as "Rusty" and is due to be a Cyclone CAT2 sometime tomorrow.
Our crude Solar Activity indicator looks to be pointing at this event as the start of the SECOND February Piers Corbyn "R5" event and we should see an enhancement to storm events around the world any time soon...more to follow
Tropical storm Rusty is forecast to strike Australia as a tropical cyclone at about 06:00 GMT on 26 February.Data supplied by the US Navy and Air Force Joint Typhoon Warning Centersuggest that the point of landfall will be near19.3 S,118.5 E.Rusty is expected to bring 1-minute maximum sustained winds to the region of around 175 km/h (109 mph).Wind gusts in the area may be considerably higher.
According to the Saffir-Simpson damage scale the potential property damage and flooding from a storm ofRusty'sstrength (category 2)...click trust.org/alertnet/news/ link for more
YouTube from SolarHam.com I think I have found yet another Solar flare and Earthquake combination today, surprising the Piers Corbyn "R3" rating does not support this as a being as a key Solar/Lunar event, I will keep this news report as a stat for the end of year analysis.....more to follow.
SolarHam.com: Solar activity has been low with a long duration C-Class flare detected this morning, associated with a filament eruption in the northern hemisphere. A Coronal Mass Ejection is seen leaving the Sun and may have somewhat of an Earthward component, but a majority of the cloud appears to be headed North in the latest Lasco C3 images. I will provide more updates on this when more data is available. All three visible Sunspots 1665, 1667 and 1670 are currently stable.
BOGOTA, Colombia — A powerful but deep earthquake shook a broad swath of Colombia and Ecuador on Saturday, sending frightened people fleeing into the streets, but no serious injuries or major damage were reported.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the 9:16 a.m. (14:16 GMT) quake had a magnitude of 6.9.It was centered about 7 miles (12 kilometers) from the Colombian town of Pasto and 92 miles (154 kilometers) below the surface....click washingtonpost.com for more
Below is an awesome video capturing the C8.7 solar flare around Sunspot 1667. During the eruption, a blob of plasma above the blast site is captured spinning like a Tornado vortex. Most of us Sun lovers hope for X-Class solar flares, however even a C-Class flare can be fascinating. A slow motion version is also included.
EARTH-DIRECTED ERUPTION - SpaceWeather.com: The magnetic canopy of decaying sunspot AR1667 erupted this morning (Feb. 6th @ 00:21 UT), producing a long duration C9-class solar flare and hurling a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space. According to first-look images from NASA's STEREO-B spacecraft, the CME appears to be heading in the general direction of Earth...click SpaceWeather.com link for Video link
I recently had a couple of Tweets fromtwitter.com/ElimRosie and also twitter.com/Hudsonweather that Piers had lost both rounds, but in fact Piers has won them both, and this report from the Daily Mail shows an account of the recent overnight Snow in the UK to confirm Piers second R5+ Victory....well done to him for this forecast from the END OF DECEMBER issued MID DECEMBER.

Met Office Severe Weather Warnings have been issued for the ice and snow. Yellow warnings are in place across parts of the UK, and the public are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings and plan ahead if they are travelling. Met Office weather warnings help you plan, prepare and protect yourself and others from the impacts of severe weather.
Paul Gundersen, Met Office Chief Forecaster, said: "The weather will stay very cold, but mostly dry through the rest of the week with severe frosts and patchy fog at night continuing to make it very icy.
"Everyone should continue to be aware of severe weather over the next few days and should plan ahead to take account of possible travel delays or disruption."
Darron Burness, the AA's Head of Special Operations, says: "With freezing conditions set to continue till the weekend, ice is going to be the biggest ongoing hazard over the next few days. Even if your car's thermometer shows the air temperature above freezing, bear in mind that the ground takes longer to thaw out, so ice is still a risk. Wherever you're travelling this week, stick to the gritted main roads where possible and check the Met Office weather alerts and traffic reports before departing."
See below latest forecast issued one day later (24th January): Now Updated with NEW Met Office forecast and an out of date Media report issued TODAY!
16 January 2013 - The Met Office is warning of the risk of disruption as heavy snow is forecast across many parts of the UK on Friday.
A band of rain will push into the west into Friday morning, turning increasingly to sleet and snow. Parts of northwest England, Wales and the west midlands are particularly at risk of seeing significant falls of snow and the risk of blizzard conditions in the strong winds.
Met Office Severe Weather Warnings have been issued for the heavy snow. An amber warning is in place for parts of Wales and western England where accumulations of 10 to 15 cm are expected and 20 cm or more over the hills.
Met Office weather warnings help you plan, prepare and protect yourself and others from the impacts of severe weather. An amber warning means you need to be prepared for the weather and take steps to change your plans and protect you, your family and your community from the impacts of the severe weather.
Whilst snow will fall over most areas, the far west, including Northern Ireland, Cornwall and extreme western parts of Wales are expected to see rain.
Eddy Carroll, Met Office Chief Forecaster, said: "The snow is expected to be heaviest through Friday morning, slowly weakening and clearing east during the second half of the day.
Updated below with new AMBER warning information upto Sunday
Using their hi-tec website, this 3-5 day Met Office forecast indicates there is nothing to worry about, otherwise it would be coloured, and as you can see it's plain or if you like "un-shaded", indicting for the time of the year they expect "normal January weather", that is in contrast to the 1-2 day forecast I have posted below, it is shaded and includes a level 3 warning due to the below average cold weather and snow etc.
Those of you who have seen the forecast for this period, issued from WeatherAction.com by Piers Corbyn at the end of December (that's right, "end of December") would have noticed that Piers is expecting this period to be one of his highest solar ratings of the year, an R5+, and it takes place from Wednesday 16th and ends on the 18th*. Then allowing for one or two days for the Earth's climate to "process" this event (that's "cause and effect" to you and me) there should be a noticeable climatic change (NOT a "man made" one, but a "Solar Climate Change") in the UK and indeed around the world taking place by no later then Sunday 20th January.
I will include these Met Office daily charts until the last day (Sunday), they should start to change colour, maybe even "Red" as we progress through the week
