A moment of clarity: UK experiences 'weirdest' weather by Roger Harrabin, BBC News

The UK has experienced its "weirdest" weather on record in the past few months, scientists say.

The driest spring for over a century gave way to the wettest recorded April to June in a dramatic turnaround never documented before.

The scientists said there was no evidence that the weather changes were a result of Man-made climate change.

But experts from three bodies warned the UK must plan for periodic swings of drought conditions and flooding.

The warning came from the Environment Agency, Met Office and Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) at a joint briefing in London.

Terry Marsh, from the CEH, said there was no close modern precedent for the extraordinary switch in river flows. The nearest comparison was 1903 but this year was, he said, truly remarkable.

A Moment Of Clarity: Why sustainability is bad for the environment by Paul Kingsnorth
Friday, October 5th 2012, 10:23 AM EDT
Co2sceptic (Site Admin)
The environmental movement which started out working to sustain nature at large has ended up campaigning to sustain industrial civilisation instead.

For many years, I called myself an 'environmentalist'. I don't use the word anymore, though the things that motivated me to do so are still important to me - perhaps more than they ever were.

I became an environmentalist because of a strong emotional reaction to wild places and to natural beauty. From that reaction came a feeling, which became a series of thoughts: that such things are precious for their own sake; that they are food for the human soul; that they need people to speak for them to, and defend them from, other people because they cannot speak our language and we have forgotten how to speak theirs; and because we are killing them to feed ourselves and we care about it, sometimes, but we do it anyway because we are hungry, or we have persuaded ourselves that we are.

A Moment of Clarity: How Forests Thrive After Fires and Volcanoes
Tuesday, August 7th 2012, 6:23 AM EDT
Co2sceptic (Site Admin)
ScienceDaily (Aug. 6, 2012) — Forests hammered by windstorms, avalanches and wildfires may appear blighted, but a Washington State University researcher says such disturbances can be key to maximizing an area's biological diversity.

In fact, says Mark Swanson, land managers can alter their practices to enhance such diversity, creating areas with a wide variety of species, including rare and endangered plants and animals.

"The 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens, for example, has created very diverse post-eruption conditions, and has some of the highest plant and animal diversity in the western Cascades range," says Mark Swanson, an assistant professor of landscape ecology and silviculture in Washington State University's School of the Environment.

Swanson, who has studied disturbed areas on Mount St. Helens and around western North America, presents his findings this week at the national convention of the Ecological Society of America in Portland.

A momement of clarity: Is Al Gore now a help or hindrance to the global warming cause? by Leo Hickman, The Guardian: Updated by Piers Corbyn
Thursday, September 15th 2011, 8:13 AM EDT
Co2sceptic (Site Admin)
Al Gore's Climate Reality Project is broadcasting its message to 24 time zones across 24 hours.

Death by Powerpoint. I have suffered this torture too many times over the years. We all probably have.

So I was a little nervous this morning logging into Climate Reality – Al Gore's 24-hour global-warming warning – as to what I might discover. And, I have to say, my heart immediately sank.

A no-doubt sincere presenter from the Solomon Islands was showing slide after slide of extreme weather events around the world that have occurred over the past year and linking everyone, it seemed, to the rise in anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. As anyone who follows the climate debate closely knows, that is a very contentious peg on which to hang your hat. That kind of talk traditionally requires lots of caveats and careful explaining. Done with abandon and raw emotion – as this presenter seemed to be doing – and you are quickly labelled in some quarters as a climate "alarmist".

A Moment Of Clarity: Earth's Extreme Weather Events Since 1871 Reanalyzed
Wednesday, January 26th 2011, 12:25 PM EST
Co2sceptic (Site Admin)
ScienceDaily (Jan. 25, 2011) — From the hurricane that smashed into New York in 1938 to the impact of the Krakatoa eruption of 1883, the late 19th and 20th centuries are rich with examples of extreme weather. Now an international team of climatologists have created a comprehensive reanalysis of all global weather events from 1871 to the present day, and from the earth's surface to the jet stream level.

The 20th Century Reanalysis Project, outlined in the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, not only allows researchers to understand the long-term impact of extreme weather, but provides key historical comparisons for our own changing climate.

"Producing this huge dataset required an international effort to collate historical observations and recordings from sources as diverse as 19th century sea captains, turn of the century explorers and medical doctors, all pieced together using some of the world's most powerful supercomputers at the US Department Energy's National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center in California and the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility in Tennessee," said lead author Dr Gil Compo.

A moment of clarity: 2010 Phoenix summer one of hottest ever due to overnight lows by Shaun McKinnon
Monday, September 6th 2010, 8:42 AM EDT
Co2sceptic (Site Admin)
Winter expected to be milder, drier than normal

Summer's unofficial end won't keep daytime temperatures from reaching 100 degrees, but September usually promises more bearable conditions when the sun sets, an especially welcome change this year after a season full of sweaty nights.

The meteorological summer - June, July and August - ended last week as the ninth-warmest on record in Phoenix, the National Weather Service reported.

The average daytime high of 105.3 degrees was almost normal, but overnight lows averaged 82.8 degrees, almost 3 degrees above normal and the fifth-warmest nighttime average in 114 years of record-keeping.

All of the 10 temperature records broken or tied during the summer months were high minimums, with the highest lows on July 16 and July 19, when the temperature never dipped below 94.

Phoenix's hot nights are largely the result of the urban heat island, scientists believe. The concrete, asphalt and buildings absorb heat all day and trap it, releasing it far more slowly than the open desert, where nights cool quickly.

UN says case for saving species 'more powerful than climate change' by Juliette Jowit, The Guardian
Saturday, May 22nd 2010, 11:42 AM EDT
Co2sceptic (Site Admin)
Image AttachmentGoods and services from the natural world should be factored into the global economic system, says UN biodiversity report.

The economic case for global action to stop the destruction of the natural world is even more powerful than the argument for tackling climate change, a major report for the United Nations will declare this summer.

The Stern report on climate change, which was prepared for the UK Treasury and published in 2007, famously claimed that the cost of limiting climate change would be around 1%-2% of annual global wealth, but the longer-term economic benefits would be 5-20 times that figure.

The UN's biodiversity report – dubbed the Stern for Nature – is expected to say that the value of saving "natural goods and services", such as pollination, medicines, fertile soils, clean air and water, will be even higher – between 10 and 100 times the cost of saving the habitats and species which provide them.

To mark the UN's International Day for Biological Diversity tomorrow, hundreds of British companies, charities and other organisations have backed an open letter from the Natural History Museum's director Michael Dixon warning that "the diversity of life, so crucial to our security, health, wealth and wellbeing is being eroded".

A moment of clarity: Turnbull to quit politics by Phillip Coorey, Sydney Morning Herald
Wednesday, April 7th 2010, 6:07 AM EDT
Co2sceptic (Site Admin)
Former federal opposition leader Malcolm Turnbull has announced he will quit parliament.

"I have announced I will not recontest Wentworth at the election this year," he said today.

Mr Turnbull has been considering his future since Tony Abbott beat him by one vote in a leadership ballot in December.

He lost his leadership because he supported an emissions trading scheme to tackle climate change. Mr Abbott, who also once supported such an approach, dumped it as Liberal policy in his first act as leader.

In a statement released this morning, Mr Turnbull rued that decision.

"I thank [former prime minister] John Howard for giving me the opportunity to serve as environment and water minister. With his support I was able to ensure that for the first time in our history the interstate waters of the Murray Darling Basin were placed under national responsibility," he said.

"However, I regret that another important reform begun during that time, the establishment of an emissions trading scheme, is no longer Liberal Party policy."

A Moment Of Clarity: UN must investigate warming ‘bias’, says former climate chief by Ben Webster, Environment Editor, and Robin Pagnamenta, The Times
Monday, February 15th 2010, 9:17 AM EST
Co2sceptic (Site Admin)
‘Every error exaggerated the impact of change’

The UN body that advises world leaders on climate change must investigate an apparent bias in its report that resulted in several exaggerations of the impact of global warming, according to its former chairman.

In an interview with The Times Robert Watson said that all the errors exposed so far in the report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) resulted in overstatements of the severity of the problem.

Professor Watson, currently chief scientific adviser to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, said that if the errors had just been innocent mistakes, as has been claimed by the current chairman, Rajendra Pachauri, some would probably have understated the impact of climate change.

The errors have emerged in the past month after simple checking of the sources cited by the 2,500 scientists who produced the report.

The report falsely claimed that Himalayan glaciers would disappear by 2035 when evidence suggests that they will survive for another 300 years. It also claimed that global warming could cut rain-fed North African crop production by up to 50 per cent by 2020. A senior IPCC contributor has since admitted that there is no evidence to support this claim.

The Dutch Government has asked the IPCC to correct its claim that more than half the Netherlands is below sea level. The environment ministry said that only 26 per cent of the country was below sea level.

A Moment Of Clarity: The case for climate action must be remade from the ground upwards by Ian Katz, The Guardian
Tuesday, February 9th 2010, 8:22 AM EST
Co2sceptic (Site Admin)
With the science under siege and the politics in disarray, it may fall to civil society to keep this still crucial fight alive

What a difference three months makes. Back in November, the world broadly agreed that emissions of carbon dioxide were heating up the planet and that we needed to do something about it, even if we couldn't agree exactly what. And though we'd had the usual pre-summit rollercoaster ride of dire predictions and naive exhortations (yes, I plead guilty to some of those), even hardheaded types dared to hope that Copenhagen might produce the basis of a global climate treaty.

As late as 7 December, 56 newspapers around the world could declare in a common, Guardian-led editorial: "The politicians in Copenhagen have the power to shape history's judgment on this generation: one that saw a challenge and rose to it, or one so stupid that we saw calamity coming but did nothing to avert it."

Now, with climate science under siege and climate politics in disarray, that sounds like the rhetoric of another age. The American commentator Walter Russell Mead recently captured the mood: "The global warming movement as we have known it is dead … basically, Sarah Palin 1, Al Gore zip." A senior British diplomat compares those trying to secure global action on climate change post-Copenhagen to "small groups wandering in different directions around the battlefield like a beaten army". A leading scientist offers an equally pithy assessment: "Everybody is completely clueless."

Not depressed yet? This weekend a BBC poll showed a dramatic fall in the number of people who believe warming is happening; carbon markets have tumbled; a Guardian survey of over 30 leading figures involved in climate negotiations found almost none who believed a global deal was possible this year; in Australia a man who described climate change as "absolute crap" could soon be prime minister.
