The British Broadcasting Corporation has put its weather forecasting contract out to tender – the first time since its radio broadcasts began in 1923 – after taking heat from the public for a string of embarrassingly inaccurate long-range weather forecasts. The UK Met Office, the government-owned meteorological department that has had the BBC contract for almost 90 years, is a partner with the Climatic Research Unit at East Anglia University of Climategate fame. CRU and the UK Met Office jointly provide the climate change data that the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change relies on.

The BBC’s decision comes amid one of the fiercest winters in decades that has left the country unprepared for the snow-related chaos it has seen. In August, the Met Office had forecast a mild winter. Last summer, the BBC had again been embarrassed: Thanks to the forecasts it had received from the UK Met, the BBC had warned its audience of an "odds-on barbecue summer" that instead was cool and rainy. In both cases, the BBC has faced outrage from a public that had been misled by the information the BBBC had provided it.

Many blame the UK Met Office’s abysmal forecasts record on a climate change bias. The BBC’s own climate correspondent, Paul Hudson, who for a decade had been a UK Met forecaster, believes the UK Met’s problem could stem from flawed computer models at its Hadley Centre, which provides data to the IPCC.

...here in Northern Ireland, former Environment Minister Sammy Wilson insists his climate-sceptic views now represent the majority opinion following a number of polls suggesting most people do not believe in man-made climate change. People are becoming sceptical about climate change, partly due to recent reports statistics that didn’t support global warming had been sidelined, said the DUP minister now in charge of Northern Ireland’s purse-strings. “These talks have come at the worst possible time for the global warmists,” the now-Finance Minister said as the two-week UN climate summit in Copenhagen opened amid warnings of the devastating impact climate change poses to many countries. “It’s come at a time when it’s been shown that some of the chief proponents of climate change have been massaging the figures and have been seeking to quell any voices of dissent from even having their views published in a scientific journal. “It’s also come at a bad time for them because the world isn’t warming at the minute — in the last decade temperature has been falling instead of going up. They talk about the trend over the last 100 years and ignore the last 10 and it’s making people sceptical.

THE DUP has made a "U-turn" on global warming which places it firmly in the sceptics' camp, it has been claimed.

The allegation comes as former DUP Environment Minister Sammy Wilson prepares to give a keynote speech to a conference in London today in which he will argue that man is not the primary cause of climate change - instead, he believes change is cyclical.

Only last week, his party colleague and current Environment Minister Edwin Poots took the opposite viewpoint, saying he was "particularly pleased" to announce falling figures in "harmful" greenhouse gases, which many scientists say are responsible for global warming.

The contrasting views between the two DUP men were found to be reflected in the last two party manifestos.

East Antrim MP Sammy Wilson has said that the Government is sending out mixed messages with regards to air travel.

Mr Wilson said:

“Today’s analysis by the Climate Change Committee regarding what must be done to cut air travel and the consequences of not doing so gives further confirmation that the whole climate change agenda is about finding ways of for the Government to delve deeper into the pockets of the taxpayer.

By scaring people to death with exaggerated stories of the consequences of climate change or making them feel guilty about the impact of their lifestyles on the planet the Government is softening the public up for yet new taxes.

The latest assault on air travel, which is predicted to increase by 100% by 2030 will result in billions of pounds of tax being imposed on flights – pricing flights beyond the reach of many people, but not Government Ministers and environmental’ specialists’ who will continue to fly around the world at the taxpayers expense proclaiming the evils of carbon emissions without even seeing the irony of their inconsistent behaviour.

Former Environment Minister Sammy Wilson has joined criticism of the Met Office as it defended its failure to predict our wet summer — saying it has “egg on its face”.

The East Antrim MP, who has been criticised for his disbelief in man-made global warming, accused the Met Office of losing credibility after initially predicting a heatwave summer which turned into a washout.

Back in April, it issued a seasonal forecast that sparked hopes for a warm and sunny season, described as a “barbecue summer”, based on its long-range forecast.

But in an update yesterday the situation was rather wetter, prompting questions over the usefulness and accuracy of long-term forecasting.

The Met Office said that “for the rest of summer, rainfall is likely to be near or above average over the UK and much of northern Europe”.

Northern Ireland’s environment minister has come under fire once again for his controversial views on global warming, this time from the director of a major new movie on the subject. Sammy Wilson — who controversially believes that climate change is not man made — has already said he will not be going to see environmental docu-drama The Age of Stupid, which opens in Belfast later this month.

The film, which is set 50 years in the future, stars Pete Postlethwaite as an old man looking back at archive footage from 2008 and asking why more was not done to stop climate change. Along with all 107 other Stormont MLAs, as well as his fellow Northern Ireland MPs, Mr Wilson has been invited to a special screening of the film at the QFT tomorrow, organised by Friends of the Earth Northern Ireland.

Environment Minister Sammy Wilson has claimed the Labour Government is using climate change to push through draconian policies and high taxes. Sammy Wilson, of the Democratic Unionist Party, ridiculed ideas such as a carbon credit card and other moves focusing on emissions.

He clashed with Whitehall earlier this year after objecting to a climate change advert from London which mentioned carbon. He said: "I can understand why it is important that the message be gotten over by a government which has now so many policies, so many intrusive policies.

"I can understand why they want to get the subliminal message over. That's the only way the Government is going to succeed in getting people to accept the draconian increases." He said these increases included taxation and challenges to people's ability to travel.
