Comments section of "US heatwave raises climate complexity" by Richard Black, BBC
Saturday, July 23rd 2011, 5:58 AM EDT
Co2sceptic (Site Admin)
Image Attachment Glad to see that the "banned" sceptics are still allowed to comment at the BBC, here are a few to this recent Richard Black report about the USA heat wave, no mention from Richard about the USA Temp history, just the normal "if its weather hot or cold it must be from man made co2". His point was that the public polls should swing back now it's Hot and that it was the cold winter that swung people away from MMCC, how wrong he is as you can see in the below comments.

22nd July 2011 - 17:54
Could you please direct us to the published surveys of scientists that show the percentage of them that agree the the science behind AGW is settled? If you cannot, then can you stop saying it is?

By exactly what mechanism does a few tenths of a degree increase in the global average temperature cause a stalled high-pressure system, and therefore a heatwave?
Answers on the back of a £50 note, please.

No, no, no, no, no! On way out og middle ages mini-ice age. Bound to get warmer. Early 1700 to 1800 was possibly warmer than currently. Dendrochronology not safest science to rely on re: temperatures..more manure anyone?...Go dig out the facts about global temperature rises etc and their causes...ignore the hype by people that need the hype to get research grants.

Can we also make sure of naming conventions, so as to prevent confusion, outlined in the article, that the term "global warming" has caused?
"Anthropogenic Global Climate Change" is its proper name.

Also, nice call, TVGirl.

22nd July 2011 - 18:33
Apparently, all last winter, Fox News was banging on -- it seems as a matter of company policy -- about how the cold winter meant that climate change was a big hoax.

Now they're suffering from a heatwave they keep completely silent on the matter. Now that's what you call balance!

The writer should address the good points made by others. additionally, changes in weather patterns are not the same as a trend or a cause. Solar activity has been correlated to weather temperatures better than CO2. Solar wind diverts away from the earth's atmosphere cosmic radiation which is needed for cloud formation and rain. Volcanoes spew more CO2 than man, plants and corals absorb.

Comment number 9.beesaman

@TVGirl, I asked for published data not guesstimates by supporters of AGW, let's have real science please. Try again!

Comment number 10.Paul Kerr
22nd July 2011 - 18:45
Reporting science largely requires a scientific approach ie. explaining the science, Richard could just explain above how weather is not climate and vice versa
The BBC believes 'due weight' should be given presummably to whatever is considered the consensus.

This is not science this is advocacy of a consensus view and implies the science is settled ...exactly the same mistake made with MMR

Before anyone else quotes,‘Expert Credibility in Climate Change,’ published in PNAS by Anderegg, the late Stephen Schneider, James Prall and Jacob Harold please take a moment to read:

If you want se a scholarly survey of climate scientists opinion Naomi Oreskes "The Scientific Consensus On Climate Change" is a good start.
There are a number of studies... its a simple matter of doing an internet search to confirm over 97% of climate scientists agree there os AGW.

Comment number 13.Paul Kerr
22nd July 2011 - 18:59
TVGgirl refferences a classic bit of scientific mischief which is political advocacy dressed up as open mind,
The key part of this paper is the exclusion of anyone who had not already published 20 climate publications

currently almost impossible if you arent part of the 'consensus'
see J Curry 'manufacturing consensus'

Comment number 14.Tolvir
22nd July 2011 - 19:04
This just goes to show that the MMGW advocates base thier theories on emotion rather than fact. What is missing from the report is that the percentage of people that think the climate in warming increases during the day and decreases during the night!
Australia have just introduced an energy tax, learn from the evidence infront of you, global warming is not driven by man but taxes are.

Comment number 15.beesaman
22nd July 2011 - 19:11
@Blondelamb, that's not scientific, merely propoganda dressed up as a review. Try harder!

Comment number 16.Paul Kerr
22nd July 2011 - 19:13
The consensus on the AGW , obscures the fact that most sceptics are in fact sceptical about the CATASTROPHIC predictions which cannot be supported by current observations

consider this and the concept of 'due weight'

Comment number 17.Bertie
22nd July 2011 - 19:13
MM, so if i get this right --- some people think that global warming is not happening, others think that the unusual climate we have been experiencing are part of a cycle, others think that the by products of our civilisation are causing global warming.
So what is the problem?
Right or wrong we only have one climate, we all need to live healthier lives anyway, to make natural resources last.

In case anyone actually believes the junk news stories - e.g., story shown beside this re 'Intense heat bakes US and Canada,' here's a map showing where it actually is.

It 'blankets' perhaps 1% (max) of Canada.

But close enough for 'science' reporting that quotes Bill Maher.

Comment number 19.Cariboo

Last winter was unusually long with about twice the normal snow. Summer just has not happened with incessant cloud cover rain and cool temperatures. It is just weather. Last summer I had global warming with a heat wave and forest fires.

Comment number 20.Paul Kerr
22nd July 2011 - 20:05
Bertie takes the pragmatic approach that life goes on so why not try to improve the planet? reasonable enough

The problem is the drive to decarbonise, lacks ballance, is hugely costly and distracts attention from all the truly simple problems like illness, poverty and destruction of our habitat.
Is it the most cost effective way to improve the global community?

I think not

22nd July 2011 - 20:05
LOL. The 97% Big Lie.

Yes, 75 of 77 is 97%.

Thought there were more scientists than that? Not when you cherry pick the sample the way they did.

I will never understand people who "don't believe in" man-made climate change. What's wrong with hedging your bets and assuming it is real, investing in a variety of techniques and technology that ultimately ensure that your energy production is more efficient and more local and cleaning up the air a bit? What's wrong with wanting to pay a bit less on your energy bill and breathe cleaner air?

Whats wrong with wanting to pay a bit less on your energy bill and breathe cleaner air?
Bur the drive to reduce ones 'carbon footprint' has become an argument about ethical living
Yes of course stop burning coal but you had better be prepared to accept nuclear power for a while yet

"wind power"

How does it work with no winds, as in the current eastern US weather system?

"its "clean coal" research and development programmes are being shelved"

NOT in Germany.

i dont need to be fooled by people who claim i am destroying my environment by eating meat. I know the problems humankind face and i dont need some uneducated emotive green twit trying to convince me to eat lentils to save the planet. The only problem we have is over population, NOTHING ELSE. Deal with the real problem and stop avoiding the elephant in the room. Then i will take you seriously.

Well, I guess anyone who would believe that this taxation and regulation project will lead to lower energy bills would also be a prime candidate for believing in the AGW fairy tales.

Scientists dont agree with the rest of the scientific community to get research grants. They can do it by proving them all wrong. The fact that no one yet has proven them wrong satisfactorally says something, doesnt it?

Anyone who lives in a coastal region will testify to the rise in sea levels. Anyone who lives near a glacier can attest to their shrinking. Anyone who has seen the unprecedented reduction in polar ice will agree that global temperatures are rising. I'll accept that there MAY be an argument over its cause, but anyone who denies that global warming is real has their head in the expanding Sahara.

Deary, deary me. The average IQ of the warmists blogging here has declined tremendously since the Beeb, in her infinite wisdom, changed the blog format, interesting and reasoned scientific debate has apparently been replaced by a large number of very ill informed Trolls. "Anyone who lives in a coastal region will testify to the rise in sea levels."

As per the ending of the Little Ice Age (LIA), it has but not as portrayed.

"Anyone who lives near a glacier can attest to their shrinking."

See LIA, again.

"Anyone who has seen the unprecedented reduction in polar ice"

Not unprecedented at all.

True, in terms of the comments ONLY.

If you want some intelligent discussion you need to go to other blogs. This one is now just for seeing what the latest propaganda message is, Always was, but at least the comments added to that before.

Now we have Bill Maher's expertise and muzzled feedback.

More energy added to the atmosphere means more dynamics, which means greater extremes
Is that not exactly what we're seeing in the weather?

If it wasn't for the fact that it's treated as an excuse to tax, tax, tax then I'd probably take the issue more seriously. If it's so serious then why not subsidize the cost of public transport and ration fossil fuels? Thought not, someone wants to make money out of it and there's always a politician willing to help them exploit it.
